"It's got no weapons, no armour, plus - it can't be detected by radar."
— Mike Tibbs on Anarachnid

Anarachnid was a walkerbot that fought in one of the two Walker Battles that took place in Series 3 of Robot Wars. It drew that fight with Mammoth, with both robots taking severe damage, achieving a unique feat of having never won or lost a battle.

Based around a spider and intended to feature six legs before being modified to eight and later twelve legs, Anarachnid featured a boxy black and grey body, two large red eyes and six pairs of silver legs driven by rotary mechanisms. during the Walker Battles, it featured wooden armor and no weapons, and proved especially fragile and inoffensive in its only battle.

Etymology[]

The name Anarachnid is likely a portmanteau of "anarchy" and "arachnid", the latter due to the robot's spider-inspired design.

Team[]

"Mike Tibbs, one of the characters here obviously on Robot Wars."

The team who constructed Anarachnid consisted of freelance designer Mike Tibbs, godson Mike Smith (who controlled the robot), and Paul Fenna, who was never seen on television. Tibbs' straightforward, monotonous presentation of his team's machine was briefly ridiculed by Jonathan Pearce as the match was about to start.

As the match began, Anarachnid gingerly trundled over to Mammoth, who was seemingly unable to gain purchase on the arena floor. After nearly 50 seconds of advancement, Anarachnid finally impacted Mammoth, dislodging one of its decorative eyes. This attack appeared to have immobilized Mammoth, as Sgt. Bash lit up Mammoth's top fur and Shunt axed its opponent. Despite still remaining mobile and outside of a CPZ, Dead Metal grabbed Anarachnid and easily sawed through its wooden armor, and Shunt eventually attacked Anarachnid as well, bringing the axe into the body of the frail machine. Dead Metal would continue to punish the robot, nearly tearing it in two as the match drew to a close, with Mammoth suffering additional harm from the House Robots.

Although Anarachnid was active for much more of the battle, the interference of the House Robots on both machines led to the battle being declared a draw.

Trivia[]

  • Anarachnid is debatably the slowest robot in the entire history of Robot Wars. Although its top speed was never revealed, it took over 40 seconds for Anarachnid to move halfway across the arena and make contact with Mammoth.
  • Anarachnid was mistakenly called Arachnid in the original Robot Wars Magazine.
