Army of Darkness was a heavyweight robot intending to apply for Robot Wars during the show's original run. It is unknown for certain which series the robot was designed for, however it did not appear in the show.
Design[]
Contrary to what its name implied, Army of Darkness was not a clusterbot. Instead, it was a wide, box-shaped robot with jaws at either end, bearing a very strong resemblance to US Champion Drillzilla.
According to builder Neil's website, early sketches of the robot, still known as its working name Suicide Squad, varied wildly in designs. The initial plan was heavily inspired by the M577 Armoured Personnel Carrier vehicle from the Alien film franchise, of which he was a big fan.[1]
This quickly changed to a powerful ramming design with a large rear-mounted horizontal flywheel, which evolved into a flat, two-wheel drive robot with an even larger flywheel on the front, inspired by Hypno-Disc's success. Eventually, Neil settled for "Evo 6", which was a powerful ramming box with grabbing claws on either side.[2][3]
- "This is definately the final design. It's low to avoid spinners, plus other robots will go over the top rather than get underneath and flip it. The blades have been beefed up and faceted to aid getting a grip on other robots. Plus it looks a lot cooler...."

Etymology[]
Though Neil does not mention the meaning behind its name, Army of Darkness may be a reference to the 1992 film of the same name. Likewise, the working name Suicide Squad may well reference the DC Comics antiheroes and the identically-titled comics featuring them, the first of which were released monthly throughout the late-1980s and early-1990s.
