- "The name in Greek means "a truly worthy and deserving person." Its tail can lift or crush, it has a drill extension too, and its flicking tongue deserves worthy praise!"
- — Jonathan Pearce introduces Axios and its weaponry
Axios was a competitor robot from Swindon which fought in Robot Wars: The Third Wars. Entered by a team of Cranfield University colleagues, it was defeated in the first round by reigning champion Panic Attack following a close battle, and did not appear in any other series.
The Axios team had also previously competed in The Second Wars with Ron, which, coincidentally, fought in the same Heat as Panic Attack in that series.
Design[]
Taking twelve weeks to build, Axios was a box wedge-shaped robot with a four-wheel drive skid-steer system, loosely themed to resemble a dragon or serpent-like creature. The latter was conveyed through a white and green paint scheme, incorporating green and yellow 'scales', yellow 'horns', along with red 'eyes' and a red 'tongue'.
At the front, Axios featured a wedged "tongue" as one of its two weapons, firing outwards through a twin rack mechanism. Similar in concept to the flipper assembly for Recyclopse, it was primarily intended to 'push' opponents away as an active battering ram. The other - and more damaging - weapon was a top-mounted overhead drill lance, which functioned as a 'tail' with the capability to swing at a full 180 degrees. Jokingly described by Jonathan Pearce as a "missile launcher", Axios' lance was claimed to function as a piercing spike, a lifter or a crusher, with the primary aim of pinning opponents down from the front. Though Axios itself proved fast and aggressive, neither of its weapons proved highly effective, or enabled it to have self-righting capabilities.
- "...a large tail for elevating, penetrating or pulverising the opposition."
- — Colin Offer on the lance weaponry of Axios
Etymology[]
As explained in its introduction, the robot's name, 'Axios', is derived from the Greek word meaning 'a truly worthy and deserving person'.
The Team[]
Axios was entered into Series 3 by a Swindon-based team captained by Colin Offer. In competition, Offer was joined by John Economou, and Chris Ransom. All three teammates met at Cranfield University, which they represented in Series 2 when competing with the predecessor to Axios, Ron.
Prior to The Fourth Wars, Colin Offer was chosen to be a part of The Steering Committee, a group who would meet with the Robot Wars producers to discuss matters such as seeding[1]. It is unknown whether Axios applied for the series or not.
Robot History[]
Series 3[]
In its only televised appearance, Axios was entered into Heat K, where it faced a tough draw against reigning champion Panic Attack in the first round.
Axios had a very fast start, immediately slamming into Panic Attack. Panic Attack then retaliated by pushing Axios into Dead Metal, but Axios quickly escaped. Axios then cleverly trapped Panic Attack twice with its long lance, trying to push it into Dead Metal's CPZ instead. The robots drove around each other until Panic Attack eventually lifted Axios up and flipped it over with its forks. Since Axios couldn't self-right with its lance, Panic Attack then proceeded to attack Matilda, and managed to flip her, also making her lose her shell. Meanwhile, Axios was sliced by Dead Metal and eliminated from the competition.
