Black Widow was an American competitor robot that fought in Season 2 of Robot Wars: Extreme Warriors. While it lost in the second round of the US Championship to Conquering Clown on a Judges' decision, it won the Tag Team Terror paired with Top Secret Robotics' fellow Season 2 entry, Rocky-Bot-Boa.

The robot was driven by Tonya Bingham, the wife of Rocky-Bot-Boa's driver Douan Bingham, making her one of the few female drivers in the original run of Robot Wars.

Design

Black Widow was an invertible four-wheel drive robot armed with a steel front wedge, two front milling cutters spinning at 750rpm, and a rear mounted steel spike. The robot was painted black and red after the colors of the black widow spider, considered one of the most venomous in the world, which also gave it its name. The robot's body was made from Lexan, and it had large 14 inch tyres, which allowed it to drive over its opponents. The robot had four 24 Volt electric motors for power. Despite its decidedly basic appearance, high ground clearance and exposed tires, Black Widow proved resilient and durable throughout its appearances, contributing towards its reasonable run of success in Extreme Warriors.

Etymology

The robot was named after the Black Widow spider, the common name for Latrodectus, considered one of the most venomous in the world. In keeping with the name, the robot was black with red like the spider. Tonya Bingham also referred to herself as "The Black Widow", a reference to how she was competing without her husband.

The Team

Black Widow was entered by TSR Robotics, which stood for Top Secret Robotics, who also entered Rocky-Bot-Boa in the same series. The team was formed by husband-and-wife Douan and Tonya Bingham in July 2001. After watching her husband compete in Series 2 of Robotica with Zero, Tonya applied for the next Series, filmed the following week, and built PSHHHT! to compete.

PSHHHT! was modified to become Black Widow, and the team would enter two robots into Extreme Warriors: Season 2, with Tonya entering Black Widow along with Richard Buchan and Nancy Gallagher, whilst her husband entered Rocky-Bot-Boa. The two halves of the team would compete together in the Tag Team Terror.

In the US Championship, Black Widow competed in Heat C, and faced fellow newcomer Texas Tornado and Season 1 veteran Unibite 2.0 in its first round battle.

At the start of the battle, Black Widow drove away from its opponents, as Unibite 2.0 drove at Texas Tornado, hitting the side with its disc. Texas Tornado was knocked aside, then reversed, and charged at Black Widow. Black Widow charged at Texas Tornado as well, and on impact, Black Widow bounced upwards and drove over Texas Tornado's low box-shaped body. Unibite 2.0 drove at Black Widow, but Black Widow quickly drove away, driving around Sir Killalot, which pushed Black Widow over a CO₂ jet, but Black Widow got away. Black Widow drove across the arena, whilst Texas Tornado was ramming Unibite 2.0 around in circles. Black Widow held back, then as Unibite 2.0 turned around, it drove at its side, stopping its disc, but quickly reversed away, allowing Texas Tornado to get under the front with its lifter. Texas Tornado pushed Unibite 2.0 over the flame jet, and Black Widow got behind Unibite 2.0, and pushed it into the wall with Texas Tornado's help.

Black Widow is caught by Sir Killalot in the opening melee

Black Widow turned around as Texas Tornado pushed Unibite 2.0 off the wall, pushing it by the flame jet, but in doing so, it drove onto the flame jet. As it reversed, it suddenly broke down, and Black Widow pushed past Unibite 2.0 as it drove down the arena. Black Widow turned around, and drove past Unibite 2.0, but as Unibite 2.0 drove after it, Black Widow accidentally turned and drove into Sir Killalot's claw. Sir Killalot pushed it aside with the claw, but then he grabbed Black Widow by one of its cutters.

"They haven't been taking too many licks from the other 'bots, but now, he's [Black Widow] dancing with death right here with Killalot, as Killalot gets the pincers right down on one of the spikes of Black Widow, and Killalot, doesn't look like there's going too much mercy in his mind!"

Whilst Unibite 2.0 went after the immobile Texas Tornado, Sir Killalot pulled Black Widow into his CPZ, then pushed it out, but Unibite 2.0 drove up the arena, getting beside Black Widow, and tried pushing it free of Sir Killalot's claw, so Sir Killalot let Black Widow go. Black Widow reversed away, then drove down the arena whilst Refbot counted Texas Tornado out. Black Widow drove up the arena, driving past Unibite 2.0, only to turn around and drive past it again. Refbot finished counting Texas Tornado, and as Sir Killalot and Shunt attacked it, Black Widow drove into the back of Refbot, who reversed against it, pushing it away. Texas Tornado regained mobility, and charged at Unibite 2.0, ramming it up the arena and into a CPZ. Cease was called, and Black Widow was through to the second round.

Mick Foley: "Now Black Widow, very impressive showing out there, you looking forward to taking on the clown, or whoever it might be in the next round?"

Tonya Bingham: "I'm looking forwards to taking any man on!"

Mick Foley: "Not much I can add to that, let's give her a really big round of applause!"

The can of "spiderspray"

In the second round, Black Widow met Conquering Clown 2. Before the battle, the Silvis Robotics team revealed their "secret weapon", a fake can of spider spray.

Carol Grow: "Black Widow, how do you feel about the competition?"

Tonya Bingham: "They're just a bunch of clowns!"

Carol Grow: "So you're not taking them too seriously?"

Tonya Bingham: "Nah!"

Carol Grow: "What do you feel is your advantage?"

Tonya Bingham: "I've got an awesome robot, it's lethal, and I'm the Black Widow, and I'm not scared of any clowns!"

Conquering Clown 2 pushes Black Widow against the wall, but Sgt. Bash comes over

Black Widow drove towards Conquering Clown 2, but Conquering Clown 2 drove down the arena, so Black Widow had to turn as it drove after its opponent. As it got close, Black Widow turned to attack Conquering Clown 2, but turned too far, so it turned and drove away for another attack. Conquering Clown 2 turned to face Black Widow as it charged at it, and Black Widow hit the spinning blade, sending sparks flying, and the lawnmower blade became stuck in Black Widow's wheel, sticking the two robots together. Black Widow managed to push Conquering Clown 2 back a little, but Conquering Clown 2 then managed to get an advantage, forcing Black Widow backwards, and pushing it up towards Sir Killalot, who came out of his CPZ to push the two competitors apart. Black Widow tried turning, but before it could reverse, Conquering Clown 2 got under it and forced it into the bottom arena wall.

Black Widow pushes Conquering Clown 2 back

Conquering Clown 2 pushes Black Widow into the wall

However, Sgt. Bash came out of his CPZ, got behind Conquering Clown 2 and fired his flamethrower. Conquering Clown 2's head did not catch fire, and it reversed, then turned, pushing Black Widow towards the CPZ. Black Widow reversed to get off Conquering Clown 2's wedge, but reversed into the CPZ. Conquering Clown 2 tried driving around the side of Black Widow to pin it in in the corner, but it accidentally drove around Black Widow, driving into the corner. It tried reversing out as Black Widow drove at its side, but Sgt. Bash blocked it, and set fire to the clown head. Black Widow pushed Conquering Clown 2 across the arena, over the Pit, but then reversed for another charge. Conquering Clown 2 turned around, and as Black Widow drove at Conquering Clown 2, it drove over the front wedge. Conquering Clown 2 followed it, and pushed Black Widow into the Disc of Doom button. Black Widow tried to get away, but reversed into an angle grinder, and Conquering Clown 2 pushed it down the arena into the arena wall by the edge of the CPZ. However, Sgt. Bash rushed over, blocking Conquering Clown 2 as it tried to reverse. Black Widow quickly reversed away, but Sir Killalot was driving over, and Black Widow charged into his claw, causing it to bounce off, flipping itself over. Sir Killalot picked up Conquering Clown 2 by the lawnmower blade, but eventually put it down and let it go. Conquering Clown 2 chased after Black Widow, but its lawnmower blade was no longer spinning. Black Widow reversed away as Conquering Clown 2 caught up to it, but reversed into Refbot. It quickly drove away up the arena, but despite driving into Refbot itself, Conquering Clown 2 kept chasing Black Widow.

"There's nothing but a shrunken head left on the top of that Conquering Clown, but he's still got enough power to do a little fighting, as he backs into Refbot, seems like he's got no sense of direction whatsoever, but he goes after Black Widow, who's right over and inverted!"

Black Widow flips itself over upon driving into Sir Killalot

Black Widow drove close to the flame pit, and Conquering Clown 2 got behind it, but Black Widow managed to reverse away up the arena. Conquering Clown 2 drove after it, and Black Widow tried reversing away, but reversed into Sgt. Bash. Sgt. Bash reversed back to his CPZ without attacking, and Black Widow drove past Conquering Clown 2, before reversing straight into it, driving up the ramp, over the body, flipping itself over as it drove over. Conquering Clown 2 was blocked by Sgt. Bash, allowing Black Widow to reverse down the arena. Conquering Clown 2 drove after it and got under its front, and tried to push it towards the Flame Pit, but Black Widow was able to turn, changing Conquering Clown 2's direction of push.

Conquering Clown 2 pushed Black Widow onto the Disc of Doom, which allowed Black Widow to get off it just before time ran out. The battle went to a Judges' decision, which went unanimously in favor of Conquering Clown 2.

Mick Foley: "You mentioned in the last episode that you were ready to take on any man, right? Apparently you were not ready to take on any clown!"

Tonya Bingham: "Oh well, that's right, but I'll be back!"

Mick Foley: "You'll be back?"

Tonya Bingham: "With a better 'bot!"

Black Widow also fought in the Tag Team Terror competition alongside fellow Top Secret Robotics machine Rocky-Bot-Boa, driven by Tonya Bingham's husband Douan. Their first round battle saw them facing returning team Joker and The Falcon Mark 2, with Black Widow and Joker fighting first.

Carol Grow: "Why'd you guys team up?"

Tonya Bingham: "Well we're Team T.S.R., and this is my husband over here, Rocky, and we both have very good 'bots and I think together we can make a joke out of this team!"

Black Widow focuses on Joker, and Rocky-Bot-Boa rushes over

Black Widow went out first against Joker, and the two robots drove straight at each other. Joker tried to damage Black Widow with its disc, but Black Widow got under the disc with the wedge and pushed it down the arena, until Joker managed to turn and reverse. Joker drove back at Black Widow with its blade spinning and hit Black Widow, but it did no damage, and Black Widow drove away up the arena. Black Widow drove to the Disc of Doom trigger, but after it hit the trigger, Joker drove into its side, hitting the wheels with the disc, but Black Widow was unaffected, and reversed.

All four competitors fight together

Suddenly, Rocky-Bot-Boa charged out of its CPZ, but missed Joker as it charged, driving straight into Black Widow. As Rocky-Bot-Boa reversed, Joker tried using its wedge to push Black Widow, managing to push it back a little, but the wedge went under Black Widow's wheels, allowing Black Widow to drive over the wedge and escape up the arena. Meanwhile, The Falcon Mark 2 had also left its CPZ, and got underneath Rocky-Bot-Boa. Black Widow turned around and drove at Joker, hitting the disc, but this did no damage. The Falcon Mark 2 left Rocky-Bot-Boa, and Joker and The Falcon Mark 2 trapped Black Widow between the two of them, with Joker using its wedge to push Black Widow against Falcon's rear spikes. As they pushed it over a CO₂ vent, Black Widow managed to get away, driving over their wedges to get out from between the two.

"And Black Widow goes joy-riding between the two of two of 'em! Joker and Falcon didn't know quite what to do about that!"

Joker went after Rocky-Bot-Boa, getting its disc under the back and ramming it across the arena and into the wall. Rocky-Bot-Boa got free, turned and drove around Joker, but drove onto the wedge of The Falcon Mark 2, then drove over it. Rocky-Bot-Boa drove down the arena and opened the Pit, then drove after Joker, ramming it across the arena. Rocky-Bot-Boa then left Joker and went after The Falcon Mark 2, ramming it into an angle grinder. The Falcon Mark 2 got away from the angle grinder, but Rocky-Bot-Boa pushed it towards Shunt, who axed it. Meanwhile, Joker fought Black Widow, hitting the front with its spinning disc, but Black Widow turned and drove away.

"And it's absolute metal-mashing mayhem out there! Joker and Black Widow are going head to head with each other right now! The Joker hasn't really done any damage with that spinning disc, but it sure is purty, ain't it?"

Black Widow drives over The Falcon Mark 2

Joker chased after it, hitting the wheels with its disc, but didn't damage the tyres. As Joker got at Black Widow's side, Black Widow tried to get away, but accidentally drove into an angle grinder. Joker got behind it, blocking it from getting away, but eventually let it go, and went after Rocky-Bot-Boa. As Rocky-Bot-Boa pushed the side of Joker, Joker tried reversing away, but Rocky-Bot-Boa pushed it against Black Widow, which caused it to drive on top of Rocky-Bot-Boa, with one wheel hanging over the side. Rocky-Bot-Boa turned around and pushed, causing Joker to fall off. Black Widow rammed into the side of The Falcon Mark 2, but couldn't get underneath and drove past. Black Widow reversed, turning over The Falcon Mark 2's wedge, but The Falcon Mark 2 got its lifter underneath as it did so.

"Black Widow, trying to drive right up the side of Team Falcon again. Team Falcon's wedge has certainly acted as a ramp more than once in this round!"

Black Widow rides up Joker as all four competitors fight

Meanwhile, Rocky-Bot-Boa was pushed against the wall of the CPZ by Shunt, but the competitor managed to get its chainsaw under Shunt and push it back, pushing it out of the CPZ, right into Dead Metal as he came over. Dead Metal got behind Rocky-Bot-Boa and tried to grab it, but Rocky-Bot-Boa pushed Shunt, and escaped the CPZ. Black Widow rammed into the side of Shunt, then drove at the side of Joker, pushing it, until Rocky-Bot-Boa rammed into Joker. The four competitors all drove into one another, with The Falcon Mark 2 getting its lifting arm under Rocky-Bot-Boa and lifting it up, and Joker getting its wedge under Black Widow and turning it onto its side. Black Widow fell over as Dead Metal pushed Joker. The Falcon Mark 2 pushed Black Widow in reverse, using its spikes, whilst Joker fought Rocky-Bot-Boa. Black Widow pushed The Falcon Mark 2 into Dead Metal, which cut into it and grabbed hold. The Falcon Mark 2 used its lifter to lift Dead Metal up, and Joker turned into its Tag Team-mate, pushing it free of the House Robot. Rocky-Bot-Boa charged at Joker, driving right into the disc and stopping, then pushed Joker into the arena wall in the CPZ. Shunt got behind Rocky-Bot-Boa, and Joker reversed out of the CPZ, hitting Black Widow as it did so. As Joker drove into the arena centre, near to its teammate, Rocky-Bot-Boa chased after it, and Joker accidentally turned into The Falcon Mark 2, hitting it with its spinning disc. The Falcon Mark 2 drove away, but Rocky-Bot-Boa chased after it, ramming it against Black Widow. Joker rammed into Rocky-Bot-Boa, and time ran out.

"These two teams are really evenly matched, I wouldn't have thought that from the beginning, just looking at the stats. Great driving on Bot-Boa's part, great driving on Team Falcon's part, the Joker's been in it, Black Widow's stayed in it, and the 10-second clock is going down. This is going to have to go to a judges' decision!"

Cease was called, and the Judges declared Rocky-Bot-Boa and Black Widow the winners.

In the second round, Black Widow and Rocky-Bot-Boa fought The Termite and General Chompsalot 2, with Black Widow again starting first and facing General Chompsalot 2 in the arena.

Black Widow cautiously drove forwards as General Chompsalot 2 drove at it, trying to get at the exposed wheels. Black Widow tried turning away, but as it did so, General Chompsalot 2 got behind Black Widow, getting its jaw around the back and pushed it down the arena, into Sir Killalot. Black Widow turned away from the House Robot, but General Chompsalot 2 was still holding onto the back. Suddenly, Rocky-Bot-Boa came out without being tagged. However, it missed its initial charge, charging into its Tag Team partner, so General Chompsalot 2 kept pushing Black Widow. Rocky-Bot-Boa got behind General Chompsalot 2 and tried to push it, but could not stop General Chompsalot 2 pushing Black Widow into Sir Killalot. The House Robot pinched the front wedge with his claw, breaking off a panel.

"And poor Black Widow's taking the worst punishment!"

General Chompsalot 2 grabs Rocky-Bot-Boa, whilst Black Widow attacks The Termite

Black Widow gets under The Termite

General Chompsalot 2 let got of Black Widow and went after Rocky-Bot-Boa instead. Meanwhile, The Termite came out of its corner without being tagged and opened the Pit. Rocky-Bot-Boa pushed against The Termite, but General Chompsalot 2 rushed over and got its jaw around one of the back wheels. Rocky-Bot-Boa was still able to use its other wheels to push against The Termite, and pushed it against Black Widow as it drove at The Termite's side. Black Widow and Rocky-Bot-Boa trapped The Termite between them, but The Termite managed to reverse a little to get off Black Widow's wedge. General Chompsalot 2 still had its jaws around the back of Rocky-Bot-Boa, so Rocky-Bot-Boa took advantage, reversing against General Chompsalot 2, pushing it back towards the Pit. Although Rocky-Bot-Boa managed to push General Chompsalot 2 in, General Chompsalot 2 still had a grip on it, so Rocky-Bot-Boa was pulled over the edge as well. Meanwhile, Black Widow drove under the side of The Termite and pushed. The Termite drove off the wedge, bending one of the wheel guards as it did so, but the chain for its weapon had fallen off. The Termite reversed, then drove slowly forwards. Black Widow reversed into The Termite, using its rear spike to push it.

"The point is Black Widow's still running out there unscathed! If she can put away The Termite, they may go through to the finals!"

Refbot separates Black Widow and The Termite

However, the rear spike became stuck in The Termite's back, so Refbot had to push the two apart. Black Widow drove forwards, but drove straight onto the Flame Pit.

"Not a great bit of driving! I won't make any references to women drivers here, but I tell you, she could have stayed out of there!"

After a pause, it slowly reversed off the Flame Pit, and The Termite drove into it, but drove straight onto the spike, which became stuck in The Termite again. The House Robots came over to separate them, with Sir Killalot giving The Termite a little push with his claw, then Shunt pushed the front of Black Widow a little. After another push from Sir Killalot, The Termite managed to get free of Black Widow's spike. In the last few seconds, The Termite weakly drove away from Black Widow, then reversed back at it as time ran out. The battle went to a Judges' decision which Rocky-Bot-Boa and Black Widow won.

In the Tag Team final, Black Widow and Rocky-Bot-Boa faced G-Force and Sir Force A Lot. Once again, Black Widow started first along with Sir Force A Lot.

Black Widow and Sir Force A Lot both cautiously approached each other at the start of the battle. Sir Force A Lot turned, exposing its side, and Black Widow rammed at the side and tried pushing, but Sir Force A Lot turned away. Black Widow turned around, but turned too far, giving Sir Force A Lot the chance to ram at its side, getting under the wheels, so Black Widow drove away. Rocky-Bot-Boa and Sir Force A Lot came out of their corners, with G-Force ramming past Rocky-Bot-Boa, while Sir Force A Lot rammed into Black Widow.

"And as usual, without a tag, they all come steaming in there!"

Sir Force A Lot is pushed into Matilda's flywheel

Whilst Rocky-Bot-Boa pushed G-Force onto the Flame Pit, then into one of the CPZs, Black Widow fought Sir Force A Lot, and was overturned. G-Force rushed out of the CPZ as Sgt. Bash came over, and drove towards Black Widow, which drove up the wedge. G-Force turned around to try and get it off, but Black Widow didn't fall off, so G-Force reversed, and Rocky-Bot-Boa charged past the two, brushing into Black Widow, knocking it off G-Force. Rocky-Bot-Boa got at the side of Sir Force A Lot and pushed it. Sir Force A Lot tried turning to get away, but Rocky-Bot-Boa kept pushing, forcing it into Matilda's flywheel, which ripped a gash in the back armour.

"Great bit of driving, there's Bot-Boa and the Widow, backing Sir Force A Lot into Matilda's corner again!"

Black Widow and Rocky-Bot-Boa push Sir Force A Lot together

Black Widow charged at Sir Force A Lot in reverse, but the spike went over the top of its opponent, and due to its exposed wheels and large tyres, Black Widow rode up the side of Sir Force A Lot. Rocky-Bot-Boa reversed, and Sir Force A Lot rammed Black Widow down the arena, until Black Widow managed to turn, bouncing off the side, righting itself in the process. G-Force reversed at Rocky-Bot-Boa, but missed its charge, and slammed into the wall, with one of its spikes becoming impaled in the side wall. Rocky-Bot-Boa hit the Pit release button, then drove up the arena after Sir Force A Lot. Black Widow also drove at Sir Force A Lot, but missed its charge, driving at Rocky-Bot-Boa, and Sir Force A Lot reversed into the side of Black Widow, pushing it back, but Rocky-Bot-Boa rammed into its side and pushed it.

"But meanwhile, Sir Force A Lot is right up against Black Widow, and Bot-Boa comes in to save her! Great bit of husband-and-wife driving here! We've never seen that in Robot Wars! Look at them talking it up in the box, telling each other which way to go!"

As it did so, Black Widow got its wedge under Sir Force A Lot, but Sir Force A Lot reversed away, bumping into an angle grinder as it did so. Sir Force A Lot drove down the arena, briefly driving onto the flame pit, then charged at Rocky-Bot-Boa as it drove towards it. Black Widow went back to its corner as Rocky-Bot-Boa tried pushing Sir Force A Lot, but Sir Force A Lot reversed and turned, getting at the side of Rocky-Bot-Boa and pushing it against the bottom arena wall. Sir Force A Lot reversed, then rammed Rocky-Bot-Boa, but Rocky-Bot-Boa pushed back, forcing Sir Force A Lot to an empty CPZ. Sir Force A Lot turned and reversed out of the CPZ, and kept away as Rocky-Bot-Boa chased it. The two competitors turned to face each other and slammed into each other, and Rocky-Bot-Boa pushed Sir Force A Lot until it turned away. Sir Force A Lot drove to its Tag Team partner, which was still stuck on the arena wall, and tried pushing it free. This didn't work, and Rocky-Bot-Boa rammed Sir Force A Lot into the wall. However, Sir Force A Lot was able to reverse against Rocky-Bot-Boa and push it back across the arena, past the Pit. Rocky-Bot-Boa managed to push back, and Sir Force A Lot drove away. Time ran out, and the Judges decided that the Bingham family team had won the match and the Tag Team Terror competition.

PSHHHT!

Black Widow was originally built for Season 3 of Robotica as PSHHHT!, featuring a different paint scheme and one larger mill cutter within its front wedge instead of the two on each side of the wedge. PSHHT! fought Scrap 8.2 in the Gauntlet and Labyrinth stages, losing the Gauntlet after getting flipped and immobilized, but winning the Labyrinth to face Mini-Rip in the Fight to the Finish. There, it was flipped by Mini-Rip and lost its front panel, before being rammed against the guard rails and driving itself off the platform as soon as the guard rails were lowered.
