Buford T. Pusser was a featherweight robot which competed in the 1996 US Robot Wars competition. Noted at the time for its low-profile design and early use of CNC machining techniques, it reached the Quarter-Finals of the Featherweight Face-Off tournament, only to be eliminated by Slomo 3 at that stage.[3]
According to an official souvenir programme published for the 1997 event, Buford T. Pusser was scheduled to return for that year. However, for unknown reasons, it withdrew before the competition could begin.[2]
Design[]
Buford T. Pusser's signature feature was its low height of less than two inches, made possible through the use of CNC-machined steel for the chassis and bodyshell. Along with sloped sides, this allowed the octagonal-shaped machine to deflect most weapon attacks from other robots, at the cost of being able to consistently ram and push robots with higher ground clearances. Buford T. Pusser was armed with a long retracting spike operated by a lead-screw mechanism, while its drive system incorporated 'two large RC car motors' and tracks according to Team Spike.[3]
Robot History[]
1996 US Championship[]
Buford T. Pusser fought solely in the 1996 Featherweight Face-Off. In the first round, it was drawn against Lorena, one of several robots entered by Bob Schneeveis.
Upon the battle starting, it was unable to attack Lorena immediately. When Lorena attempted to push it from the front, it ended up driving over Buford T. Pusser's front wedge. Buford T. Pusser attempted to pin Lorena at that moment, remaining stationary for several seconds before backing away. A second collision between the two robots followed. As Lorena ponderously spun around in circles near the center, Buford T. Pusser drove forwards and underneath its back plate. Again, both separated, with Buford T. Pusser continuing to pressure Lorena as the latter took hits from and was immobilized by an arena flipper. Following a few tentative nudges, it gave Lorena a final shove as it inherited its first win by knockout.[4][5]
Upon receiving a bye through the second round,[6] Buford T. Pusser next fought in the Quarter-Final stage. There, it would face Klaas Langhout and Slomo 3, another machine with an emphasis on pushing power.
Very little information is available for this battle, though Buford T. Pusser would struggle as Slomo 3 kept breaching its ground clearance with its own scoop blade. Buford T. Pusser was ultimately pinned at some point, resulting in its elimination from the battle and the Featherweight Face-Off.[3]
