- "Mad in England"
- — The team's motto, on their robot and on their shirts
Direct Action was a competitor robot that fought exclusively in the New Blood Championship, part of the second series of Robot Wars Extreme. It lost its first round eliminator against Storm 2 and Revolution 2.
Design[]
- "We were impressed (and worried about) the speed that Direct Action could get its 20Kg disk up to speed. Do not be fooled, that's one serious piece of spinning metal - more than capable of making a real mess of someone."
- — Storm 2 website[1]
Direct Action was a tall, invertible, cut-off wedge-shaped robot with two-wheel drive and armed with a horizontal flywheel weighing 25kg and spinning at up to 850rpm. The flywheel featured bolt-cutting blades and had its speed increased to 120mph following testing. Direct Action also featured 6mm nylon armour, and its body, wheels and disc were painted in a black and white chequerboard pattern. However, it had an unprotected rear end and a 3mm ground clearance, which proved to be its undoing in its only televised battle.
Qualification[]
Direct Action attended the qualifiers for Series 7, where it was drawn against Dutch Robot Wars: Series 2 champion PulverizeR and veterans Reptirron the Second and Robochicken. The ultimate winner of the battle is unknown, however Direct Action did lose the fight and along with PulverizeR failed to qualify for the main competition.
The Team[]
Direct Action was built by a team from Handsworth in Birmingham, West Midlands. The team captain was Ian Shortland, joined by Jason Bromhead and Frances Tomlin. The team's catchphrase was "MAD IN ENGLAND" and two team members also wore chequered top hats to match the design of their robot.
Robot History[]
Extreme 2[]
Direct Action competed in Heat C of the New Blood Championship, where it was drawn up against Sixth Wars competitor Revolution 2, and the eventual champion Storm 2.
Storm 2 started by shoving Direct Action into Mr. Psycho's CPZ, the flywheel-wielding robot narrowly avoiding the hammer of the House Robot. After escaping the CPZ, Direct Action lost the drive in one of its wheels and was left spinning in circles. Next, Revolution 2 attacked the invertible machine. Storm 2 then shoved Direct Action around the arena. This continued to happen for some time. Eventually free of the future runner-up, Direct Action activated the pit. Storm 2 shoved Direct Action towards the pit, nearly fell in itself, avoided it at the last second, and Direct Action then drove in, so Storm 2 went through along with Revolution 2.
