DoorStop) was a competitor robot built by a student group from Bishop Stopford[1] which attempted to enter Series 5 of Robot Wars, but failed to qualify. Built by students from Bishop Stopford School in Kettering, it lost in the qualifiers to Shredder.
Team DoorStop would later attempt to enter in Series 6 and with Biothan. It would survive its qualification melee but not be selected for the competition. The team planned to upgrade Biothan for Series 7, but decided not to enter.
Design[]
DoorStop was a 1mm steel shelled, long, black wedge with a yellow and white chevron pattern running up the front and its name on the its side. The design was originally supposed to be a front-hinged flipper. It was initially supposed to be pneumatic, but the design shifted to be powered by a linear actuator that the team described as "too slow to be effective". The design changed due to the team having no experience with pneumatics and safety concerned. By the time of the qualifiers, the team was unable to build the flipper system so it competed just as a static wedge.[2]
Team[]
Team DoorStop was composed completely of 13-14 year old students. As Robot Wars required at least one team member to be 18, Tebbutt's father joined the team to the qualifying event. Staff and other teams would ask him about the robot to which he'd politely say he didn't know anything about it and direct all questions to the students.[2]
Qualification[]
A number of photographs of DoorStop and its team members in the Pits - including one of DoorStop with Atomic 2 - confirmed that the qualifier took place during the Birmingham portion of the 2001 Live Event tour,[3][4] which was also confirmed by Tebbutt. At the qualifiers, DoorStop fought Shredder. Shredder was able to cause significant damage to the outer shell of DoorStop which would give Shredder the win and cause DoorStop to not qualify for the competition. Team DoorStop were good sports about the loss and encouraged people to check out Shredder's appearance on the show.[5] Despite the damage, most of the electronics were undamaged and thus reused by the team when making Biothan.[2]
