Dutch Robot Wars: Series 1 was the original series of Dutch Robot Wars. It was originally broadcast by BNN on Nederland 2 in 2001 and 2002. The series was presented by Rob Kamphues, the pit reporter was Bridget Maasland and commentary was provided by Eric Corton.

On 7 April 2023, an HD version of the series was added to the Mech+ service, featuring an uncropped widescreen aspect ratio and English subtitles, but omitting Eric Corton's commentary.[1]

Format[]

Before Dutch Series 1 was filmed, there were originally going to be forty-eight competing robots, with at least ninety being known to have applied.[2] However, by selection day, the number of competing robots was reduced to thirty-six machines.

Rehearsals and team selections took place at Eindhoven in June 2001, footage from which was included in the preview special Robot Wars: The Kick-Off. At least thirty-four robots in attendance were known to have been ready for demonstrations. Selection criteria included decoration, with at least Pullverizer being known to have impressed due to having fully-painted and fitted armour plating. However, for unknown reasons the series was reduced to thirty robots, meaning that at least four robots from selection day were unsuccessful in their applications. Successful applicants received a phone call confirming their appearance in mid-July, before being transported by road and Eurotunnel shuttle to Elstree Studios, England, for filming.[2]

The series began with five Heat episodes, each featuring six robots and a format similar to the Semi-Finals of the fifth and sixth UK series. After the first round, a Losers' Melee (Dutch: Verliezers-Ronde, translating to Losers' Round) decided which of the three defeated robots would reach the second round (Heat Semi-Finals). From the latter stage, two winning robots would face each other in the Heat Final.

The Grand Final was made up of the five Heat winners and one "wildcard", chosen from the defeated robots by the show's producers. This ran identically to the Heats of UK Series 4. Six robots were split into two melee battles to determine the final four competitors, which would then play off in two one-on-one Semi-Final fights. The winners of each Semi-Final - the last two competitors remaining - then battled each other for the overall Dutch Championship.

Trivia[]

  • In an official filming schedule document, dated 1 September 2001, Dutch Robot Wars: Series 1 was listed simply as BNN (the channel the series was broadcasted on), likely as a way to keep the schedule more organised. Several battles from the heats were filmed in the same slot as the two Annihilators from Extreme Series 1 and the Grand Final of The Fifth Wars.[3]
