FX Korea, often shortened simply to FX, was an Asian television channel owned by Fox Networks Group Asia Pacific, a child company to the US-based FOX network of channels. It was responsible for airing Series 8 of Robot Wars in South Korea.

History[]

FX originally launched in 1994 under the stylisation fX, and still airs in the United States to this day. It was one of the first channels to utilise emailing and the World Wide Web as methods of obtaining feedback from viewers. A show which revolved around this premise even ran for 12 years on FX, called Backchat.

In 1997, fX rebranded as "FX: Fox Gone Cable", changing its general target demographic to young to middle-aged men. Despite the relaunch, it became known for airing countless reruns of Fox-produced shows already available on other channels. It later expanded to include sports such as Major League Baseball and NASCAR, as well as several original series. FX continued to broadcast original series from 2002 onwards as competition came from rival channels such as HBO, and has since evolved to launch international channels in other continents, as well as producing new channels in the United States aimed at more specific age groups.

In 2019, The Walt Disney Company merged with 21st Century Fox. As part of the deal, this also meant the company acquired US cable and satellite channels, including FX in the United States. This filtered down to FX's licensed international channels, including FX Korea. The following year, Tcast, the licensor for Fox channels solely in South Korea, announced the termination of their license agreement with The Walt Disney Company Korea renaming its channels. As such, from the start of 2021, FX in South Korea would become MX.

On 4 August 2018 FX uploaded a 45-second trailer to their Facebook page, showing various fight highlights to the song Cut The Cord, by American rock band Shinedown.[1] The series' official name roughly translates to "Robot War: The Beginning of War".

A day later, Robot Wars would debut on FX Korea, with Jonathan Pearce's commentary replaced for a South Korean audience. Interestingly, FX Korea opted to use two commentators to dub over this, perhaps inspired by the dual commentary style of Battlebots, which had already aired on the channel two years prior. Robot Wars would continue to air every Sunday on FX Korea, with episodes repeated the following Saturday.

FX Korea's airing was distinctive as it featured a noticeably different logo and colour scheme to what was used in the original airing of Robot Wars. Though elements of the standard logo remained, the text was translated and centred as opposed to wrapping around the cog's teeth. The cog itself was darker than normal and covered in rust effects, featuring teeth all the way around. The original show's grey background was also replaced with a dark red.

Robot Wars: Battle of the Stars was shown on FX Korea in addition to Series 8, though it is unknown whether Series 9, 10 or future special episodes were aired.[2]

Trivia[]

  • This was not the first time a Fox-owned television channel had aired Robot Wars to an international audience, as Fox Kids aired Series 5-7 in Australia along with both series of Robot Wars Extreme.
