Flippant Torque was a competitor robot designed to be entered into Series 3 and Series 4 of Robot Wars. However, it was not completed in time for it to appear in Series 3, and failed to enter Series 4 either, although it is unclear whether it failed to qualify or simply did not apply for the latter. The team was based in Ipswich, Suffolk.
Construction of Flippant Torque began in March 1999, but the team had decided by mid-May that they were unlikely to be ready for the auditions of Series 3. Despite confirming with Mentorn at the end of May that they would not be attending the auditions, building of the robot continued in anticipation of future live events. However, no further updates were provided by the team after July 1999, so it is not clear if the robot was ever finished[1].
Design[]
Flippant Torque was a two-wheeled robot designed with a CO2 powered lifting weapon, with fibreglass composite armour and two 900W motors, a power system which the team believed to be unique and innovative.
The Team[]
The team was captained by sixth form student Steven Hall, and he was joined by twin brother Andrew Hall, friend Justin Denny and Richard Hall. Steven Hall took the lead on most of the design and construction of Flippant Torque, completing the work alongside his school studies. According to the team's website, Andrew Hall was to be the driver, Denny would operate the weapons, and Richard Hall acted as Technical Advisor[2].
