"Fluffy by name, not Fluffy by nature..."
— Robot Wars: The Ultimate Guide

Fluffy was a competitor from London that fought in Series 5-7 of Robot Wars, and also competed in both series of Extreme, with a unique blend of convincing victories and underwhelming losses.

After a quiet debut in Extreme, Fluffy caused major damage to 101 and Terrorhurtz in back-to-back wins during Series 5, and gained the upper hand on the second seed Pussycat before suddenly breaking down to fall at the Heat Final stage, but nevertheless earned the Most Promising Newcomer Award. Fluffy fell in the second round of Series 6 to Stinger, but jointly won the UK vs Germany Special in the same series, representing the United Kingdom. However, Fluffy's infamous reliability issues prevented it from winning any battles in Extreme 2 or Series 7.

Design[]

"After designing Charybdis entirely on 2D CAD and the backs of envelopes, we thought our next design needed to be a bit more thorough. We used a piece of software called Pro/DESKTOP which allowed us to model all the components within the frame in 3D. The advantage of using CAD is that, once you are familiar with the program, you can move parts around and try different frame layouts much more quickly than if you were designing with scale models or on paper. We decided that the new robot needed to be narrower, lower, and have thicker armour and a larger weapon."
— Fluffy website on designing Fluffy[1]

Fluffy in Series 6

Fluffy was a low heptagonal-shaped robot which was capable of reaching 8 mph in Extreme 1 and Series 5, but 20mph in later series. It was built to be as compact as possible to allow for a very thick chassis and armour and two rubber wheels. It was an invertible machine armed with a weapon the team described as a 20kg horizontal double-headed 'spinning axe', which spun at 1500-2000rpm. In actuality, Fluffy was a pioneer of the bar spinner, and it was the flat side of the bar which made contact with other robots, rather than the spiked counterweights. Fluffy proved to be extremely destructive in its battles, even managing to disarm the number two seed Pussycat, and it was also well armoured in 16mm polycarbonate with a brazed steel frame. However, its 62cc 4.7hp petrol engine powered the spinning weapon, which created a fire risk, and the robot had a 2cm ground clearance.

"Has a heavy weapon like a double-ended spinning axe, and looks far from fluffy here! Also has a brazed steel frame, polycarbonate armour an 8mph top speed."
Jonathan Pearce introduces Fluffy in Series 5

In all appearances, the robot's frame was constructed from ERW mild steel tube, supplied by Tyco Tube/Hub Le Bas, the robot had 4QD speed controllers and Bosch motors from Ellis Components. The robot used lots of go-kart parts, including sprockets and chains, supplied by Zoom Karts[2]. In Series 5, Fluffy had two 6mm polycarbonate plates as armour on the top and bottom, with two 8mm polycarbonate panels and 1mm stainless steel for the sides armour. The robot had three 24 Volt Bosch GPA 750 Watt motors; one for each wheel, and one for the weapon, all of which was powered by two Kiel 12V 18ah batteries, giving the robot a top speed of 8mph. The robot's chassis was constructed from 1.125" diameter mild steel tube[3].

Fluffy Qualifiers

For Series 6, Fluffy was rebuilt, with a slightly larger chassis and weapon - 2mm stainless steel from Metal Supermarkets was added to the side to strengthen the armour, and the frame was MIG welded, increasing the wall diameter from 1-2mm to 2.8mm. The weapon was now powered by a 62cc 4.7hp Zenoah petrol engine, provided by Glen's Models, giving more power, but affecting its reliability. A sprag clutch, supplied by BSL, was added to the weapon drive. The batteries were changed to Hawker Genesis 13ah from Knight Batteries, and the bar was increased from 560mm to 640mm. This version of Fluffy was known as Fluffy II by the team, but was still known as Fluffy on-screen. The top speed was greatly increased, to 20mph[4][5].

Smaller counterweights were used in Extreme 2 and Series 7. For Series 7, Fluffy was redesigned to be wider than before, sporting a more solid black colour scheme, and the pointed front of the robot was rounded off. The weapon's engine was replaced, with the one that was used in Series 6 and Extreme 2 being sold online[6]. The bar could now spin at 1,500rpm.

The Team[]

Team Fluffy consisted of three students representing University College London, where they were all studying mechanical engineering[7]. The young team was captained by Peter Holroyd, and he was joined by Peter and Richard Johnson for all of the team's appearances on Robot Wars. In all of the team's appearances, the robot was driven by Peter Johnson. Some of the robot's components were funded by the team's university, having first been sourced for use in Fluffy's predecessor Charybdis.

Qualification[]

Fluffy in the pits during the Series 5 qualifiers

Fluffy qualified for Series 5 after beating Kat 3 in the qualifiers, attending on August 24th[8]. The two teams had fought at the Series 4 qualifiers with their previous entries, Charybdis and Kater Killer. Fluffy caused major damage to Kat 3 during this battle, which threatened the chances of Kat 3 being ready in time for the Fifth Wars, but ultimately both robots managed to compete.

"One thing that nearly put an end to us before we got onto television this year was when we had to fight Fluffy in the try outs. ...they gave us a good thrashing - thanks lads. Keith had to spend all weekend getting us back into shape."
— Team KaterKiller website[9]

In its Series 6 qualifier, Fluffy was drawn against future champion Typhoon 2, debutant Prime Evil, and body spinner Velociripper (unrelated to Velocirippa). Prime Evil was withdrawn from the arena shortly before the battle started, leaving only three robots[10]. Fluffy was the victor of the battle, and qualified automatically for the Sixth Wars.

Unknown Robot 3

Damage caused by Fluffy's bar spinner during the battle

In its Series 7 qualifier battle, Fluffy faced an unknown invertible box-shaped robot, Terror Turtle and Gyrobot. Early on in the battle, Fluffy drove towards the side of the arena and got its spinning bar up to speed. Gyrobot charged towards it, and Fluffy turned around to attack it, cornering Gyrobot and cutting through its spinning ring. Gyrobot drove around Fluffy, and when Fluffy turned around, Gyrobot drove into its spinning bar, then drove away. Fluffy drove up the arena, then turned and attacked the invertible box-shaped robot, cutting into the side and causing sparks. Fluffy drove away to the side of arena, and as Terror Turtle fought the invertible box-shaped robot, Fluffy charged at Gyrobot, which was spinning on the spot to increase the effect of its spinning ring. On impact, Fluffy was deflected aside. Fluffy turned back at Gyrobot, landing a glancing blow, then turned away to get its spinning bar back up to speed. When it was, Fluffy drove past Gyrobot, then attacked the invertible box-shaped robot, but turned away and drove into the wall. Fluffy got its bar back up to speed, and cautiously approached Gyrobot. It landed a blow, before turning and attacking Terror Turtle. However, after this attack, Fluffy broke down. The invertible box-shaped robot pushed it against the wall, and the other three competitors fought for the rest of the battle[11]. Gyrobot was declared the winner by the Judges, but Terror Turtle and Fluffy were also given discretionary places. Fluffy had cut through the frame of Terror Turtle and sliced through Gyrobot's spinning rim, damage that would not be fully repaired before Gyrobot fought in Series 7.

"Fluffy was so powerful but unfortunately they broke down, however they still got through into the series."
— Steve Wood on Fluffy at the Series 7 qualifiers[12]

Robot History[]

Extreme 1[]

"One winner from each of our Mayhem battles goes through to one of our Annihilators later on in the series; Wild Thing, will it be he, or Arnold A. Terminegger, or an impressive newcomer to Robot Wars, Fluffy, with very powerful weaponry - watch out for that one!"
— Jonathan Pearce before the battle

Fluffy's only appearance in Extreme Series 1 was a rather quiet debut in a Mayhem qualifier battle where it was put up against Arnold A. Terminegger and Wild Thing.

"The lightest in this Mayhem, slowest too, but the polycarbonate armour is 16 millimetres thick and the weapon is like a double-edged spinning axe. This is no fluffy toy here!"
— Jonathan Pearce describes Fluffy as its statistics board is displayed
WildThingpushesimmobileFluffy

Wild Thing pushes the immobile Fluffy towards the arena wall

At the start of the battle, Fluffy got its weapon up to speed, and backed away as Wild Thing charged at it. Wild Thing drove past, then turned for another attack at Fluffy, and Arnold A. Terminegger drove towards Fluffy, so Fluffy drove down the arena, and Wild Thing attacked Arnold A. Terminegger instead. Fluffy drove to the centre of the arena and turned around as Wild Thing drove down the arena. As Wild Thing drove past, Fluffy hit its side, then turned away as Wild Thing turned around to chase after it, with Arnold A. Terminegger also driving after it. Fluffy managed to avoid them by driving around Arnold A. Terminegger, causing Wild Thing to drive into Arnold A. Terminegger. However, Arnold A. Terminegger and Wild Thing turned around, and Wild Thing got at Fluffy's side as it turned around. Fluffy tried to turn away, but Wild Thing turned with it and kept pushing.

"And Wild Thing, locked together there with Fluffy at that moment in time."
— Jonathan Pearce as Wild Thing pushes Fluffy around
Arnold A Terminegger vs Wild Thing vs Fluffy

Fluffy is pounded by Arnold A. Terminegger

Fluffy's spinner slowed to a stop on hitting Wild Thing. Arnold A. Terminegger got behind Fluffy and hit it with its axe, and Fluffy tried driving forwards to get away, but Wild Thing kept after it, driving into its side, then driving into the front as Fluffy tried to get its spinner back up to speed. Wild Thing pushed Fluffy around in a circle, then got at its side and pushed it into the arena side wall, immobilising it completely. Wild Thing reversed away, and Arnold A. Terminegger got at Fluffy's side and hit the immobile competitor with its axe a few times, and Wild Thing rammed into Fluffy's back. Arnold A. Terminegger tried to get its lifter under Fluffy's side and lift Fluffy, but didn't get the lifter underneath properly, and when it tried to lift, the axe swung back and hit the floor, causing it to overbalance forwards. Wild Thing took advantage, ramming into Arnold A. Terminegger. The two mobile competitors left Fluffy and continued to fight.

"Meanwhile, I think Fluffy has been immobilised. Down in the "Pit! Pit! Pit!" that's where they {the audience} want Fluffy or Terminegger to go, they're not fussy, let's be honest!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy is counted out.
Fluffy pitted floor flipper

Fluffy ends up in the Pit after being thrown by the Floor Flipper

The immobilised Fluffy was counted out by Refbot, and Sir Killalot pushed Fluffy away from the wall with his claw, then pushed it across the arena, backing it onto the Floor Flipper. Fluffy was thrown across the arena, landing on its side, and due to its rounded shape, it bounced along, rolling on its side, and fell into the open Pit of Oblivion.

"Fluffy's out of it, of course, and is onto the arena Flipper. Any second now...one, two, three, sails through the air, a bang and a crash - ha-ha-ha-ha-ha - and down into the Pit. They got their wish."
— Jonathan Pearce

Fluffy was therefore eliminated from the Mayhem competition. The battle eventually went to a Judges' Decision between the two mobile competitors, and Arnold A. Terminegger won.

Series 5[]

"...its main weapon is this 20 kilogram spinning blade, which can spin up to around 2000 RPM, and we think anything we can hit, we're gonna cause chaos!"
— Peter Holroyd in the team's introuduction

Fluffy entered Series 5 as a newcomer, where it entered a first-round battle with the twenty-third seed and former semi-finalist, 101.

"I like the look of Fluffy's weapon here, that spinning axe blade."
— Jonathan Pearce in the early moments of the battle
101Track

The severed track falls from 101 after Fluffy shredded it

Fluffy began by getting its weapon up to speed, whilst 101 charged at Fluffy. Fluffy drove forwards and tried turning to avoid 101 as it closed in, but 101 hit its side before it could get away. Fluffy turned and landed a glancing blow 101's side, then turned away and drove into the centre of the arena. 101 drove after Fluffy, but as it got close, Fluffy turned to hit it, and hit the right track, breaking it and severely reducing 101's mobility.

"In it comes on the attack, and immediately the blade catches 101's right track! And that certainly, has rendered 101, almost, almost immobile!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy rips off 101's right track
Fluffy vs 101

Fluffy persists in its attacks on 101

101 turned away, and Fluffy tried to hit 101 again, but its weapon needed to be restarted, so it turned away. 101 span around on the spot, its broken track hanging off the robot, and Fluffy hit 101's front. 101 reversed, leaving behind the broken track, then drove up to the top of the arena, where Fluffy hit the side. 101 reversed as Fluffy turned around, but Fluffy kept after it, hitting the front. 101 reversed some more, and Fluffy tried to hit 101's front, cutting a large gash, but its weapon had slowed, so it turned away to dodge 101's spike. As Fluffy drove into the centre of the arena to get its weapon back up to speed, 101 drove into the middle arena entry gate. It turned away, but couldn't get away before Fluffy slammed into the front.

"Look at the damage caused by the Fluffy blade! Mike Franklin looks on and sees the destruction caused to his machine 101, and can't believe it!"
— Jonathan Pearce reading the last rites to the former semi-finalist
101Fluffy

Fluffy tears into the struggling 101

With 101 now immobile on one side, it could only turn back and forth at the top of the arena, and Fluffy turned around to get its weapon back up to speed, then drove back at 101 as it reversed back against the top arena wall, hitting the buckled side of 101, bending it even further. 101 span around, and managed to get away from the top arena wall, but could do nothing as Fluffy drove around it, hitting the side again, then drove around it, turned around, and hit the other side and pushed it. Time ran out, and because 101 had not been counted out, the battle went to the Judges, but the result was clear.

"And I think we're going to see a lot more of Fluffy in Robot Wars. I've been hugely impressed! You see, they {101} can't really get away. They are just alive, so technically it will have to go to a Judges' decision. But I think you and I know which way it's gonna go, don't we? Very impressive, Fluffy."
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy attacks 101 in the last few seconds

Unsurprisingly, the Judges voted Fluffy through.

Fluffy was then drawn up against another experienced team, Terrorhurtz, the successor to Killerhurtz in the second round of the Heat. The Fluffy team added an extra layer of polycarbonate on top of the robot to protect against the axe of their opponent, while Team Hurtz added a "Fluffy launch device" to deflect Fluffy's attacks.

Philippa Forrester: "And in the battle of the axes also, Fluffy! First timers, just fantastic! Double-headed spinning axe, so can the spinning axe beat the chopper?"
Peter Holroyd: "We're gonna give it our best shot, but we're fairly scared of their axe, because it's very, very large and heavy, so we've actually added an extra layer of armour, on the top."
Philippa Forrester: "Ah, extra thick! Right, so will you be trembling in your box?"
Peter Holroyd: "Maybe just a little bit, but we're gonna give it our best shot!"
Philippa Forrester: "I'd be trembling against a chopper that size!"
— Pre-battle interview
THZFluffy

Terrorhurtz axes Fluffy

Unusually, Terrorhurtz started the battle very close to Fluffy, rather than on the opposite side of the arena. As Activate was called, Terrorhurtz charged straight at Fluffy as it tried to turn and get away, getting under Fluffy's side and hitting the top with its axe. Terrorhurtz landed three blows in quick succession, and Fluffy got its blade up to speed, and slid off the front wedge, allowing to drive away from Terrorhurtz. Fluffy drove up the arena, near Sir Killalot's CPZ, then turned around. Terrorhurtz drove after it, dodging the spinning blade, and trying to hit Fluffy with the axe, but narrowly missed. Fluffy drove around Terrorhurtz and drove into the arena centre. Terrorhurtz chased after it, and quickly caught up with it, but before it could axe Fluffy, Fluffy drove around to Terrorhurtz's side, dodging Terrorhurtz's axe blow. Fluffy turned around, landing a glancing blow on Terrorhurtz's front, drove past Terrorhurtz, then turned around again, and drove past Terrorhurtz, which missed an axe blow. Fluffy span around, then drove across the arena. Terrorhurtz chased after it, and Fluffy turned to face it as it closed in. As the two robots came together, Terrorhurtz hit Fluffy's top with its axe, but this didn't do any damage, and as it did so, Fluffy hit Terrorhurtz's side (the side without the "Fluffy launch device") and tore away the side armour, crippling Terrorhurtz's mobility and cracking one of Terrorhurtz's gas valves. This caused CO2 to leak from the machine and left the internals and left wheel exposed.

"Oh, what about that for an attack! Well it's Terrorhurtz that has the side ripped off it! As it came in on the attack on Fluffy, there the Fluffy blade ripped away the side armour of Terrorhurtz!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy rips off Terrorhurtz's side
THZDamage

Terrorhurtz ends up being ripped open

Terrorhurtz was left only able to turn back and forth, and Fluffy drove away for another attack, driving into the arena centre, then turning back and charging at Terrorhurtz's front. This attacked knocked some of Terrorhurtz's internals out, leaving it immobile. Fluffy turned away for another attack, then charged back at Terrorhurtz, pushing it onto the flame pit.

"I am so impressed by Fluffy, their first time in [the UK Championship of] Robot Wars, and Terrorhurtz are discombobulated! Something has been ripped away from the inside, and they're facing, here, oblivion, from that very strong Fluffy team."
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy pushes Terrorhurtz onto the flame pit

Refbot began counting out Terrorhurtz, and Fluffy charged at Terrorhurtz's front, but it withstood the blow, so Fluffy quickly turned and drove away. Refbot finished his count, and Fluffy charged back at Terrorhurtz, slamming into Terrorhurtz's front, but bounced off, hitting Refbot. Fluffy drove away as the House Robot attacked Terrorhurtz, with Sir Killalot putting Terrorhurtz on the Floor Flipper, and after it was thrown, it was pitted by Shunt who went in as well.

Peter Johnson: "I didn't think it'd be that easy!"
Craig Charles: "Well that's a good axe, isn't it?"
Peter Johnson: "Yeah, it got some good hits in, we can see the marks from here."
Craig Charles: "But you ripped them apart!"
— Post-battle interview

In the Heat Final, Fluffy faced the second seed and defending runner-up, Pussycat.

Philippa Forrester: "You're first-timers, you've got all this far {sic}, so far you've been biding your time, the last war you were only a reserve, you never made it through, and look at you now! The Semi-Finals are just within grasping distance! Can you do i?"
Peter Johnson: "I think so, we haven't had an easy robot yet, have we?"
Philippa Forrester: "No."
Peter Johnson: "And, well, Pussycat's just another one in the line."
Philippa Forrester: "It's not just another one in the line, it's seeded number 2! It was a Grand Finalist last year! Doesn't that make you slightly nervous?"
Peter Johnson: "I think it'll damage us more than other ones have, but I think we'll win!"
— Pre-Heat Final interview
Pussycat vs fluffy

Pussycat and Fluffy clash early on

FluffyPussycat

Fluffy rips off Pussycat's blade

The two machines began by charging at each other, and as Fluffy drove at Pussycat, it got its blade up to speed, so that when the two competitors came together, the blade clipped Pussycat's body, deflecting both machines away. Fluffy turned around and Pussycat drove at it, but Fluffy turned to avoid the disc, then drove away down the arena. Pussycat charged after Fluffy, slamming into the side, which bounced the seeds up onto all four wheels. Pussycat tried to push Fluffy, which pushed it onto two wheels, but with Fluffy leaning against its base, it couldn't move its opponent, so dropped Fluffy. Fluffy got its blade back up to speed and turned away, then drove to the top of the arena. Both machines turned to face each other and charged together, though Fluffy swerved and hit Pussycat's side. Pussycat drove after Fluffy, but Fluffy turned and hit Pussycat with the spinning blade, and in one attack it ripped off the spinning blade and one of the castors off. Pussycat was left with no weapon, so it looked as if Fluffy were going to win.

"That was no tickling! The Pussycat blade is gone! Look at this, it was blade against blade, and Pussycat were no match!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy rips off Pussycat's blade

Fluffy drove up the arena, stopping near a flame jet, and despite having no weapon, Pussycat chased after it. Fluffy hit Pussycat's front, but the blade was slowing, so it did no damage and stopped on impact. Pussycat pushed against Fluffy, but quickly turned away and turned around for another attack. Pussycat drove over the flame jet as it fired and drove into Fluffy, which suddenly broke down.

"The blade of Fluffy is moving, but they're not - they're not progressing across the arena floor! What a surprise this would be! Fluffy are being counted out! The Pussycat blade was gone, but they kept battling, and Fluffy conked out! Absolutely startling! What a battle that was!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy is counted out

FluffyPitted

Fluffy is pitted by Dead Metal who falls in as well

Fluffy got the blade back up to speed, but it could not move. Refbot got behind it and gave it a little push, but it was immobile, so Refbot began counting it out. Once Fluffy's elimination was confirmed, it was left to the House Robots. Dead Metal cut into Fluffy, before Sir Killalot grabbed its front with his claw, stopping the blade and lifting the robot up, taking it to the floor flipper, where it was thrown across the arena. Dead Metal pushed Fluffy towards the pit, stopping to cut into it a little, before pushing it into the Pit of Oblivion, but he drove to far and drove in as well.

"I thought we were on the brink of one of the great Robot Wars surprises!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy is placed on the Floor Flipper

Thus, the surprise win was awarded to Pussycat, putting it through to the Semi-Finals and eliminating Fluffy from the competition.

Craig Charles: "I mean, you took his saw off - you'd won the fight! And then you stopped moving!"
Peter Johnson: "Yeah, I don't know, it's just something's gone, the power to the wheels' gone, but the weapon's still going."
Craig Charles: "You must feel gutted, you must feel absolutely gutted! They're the second seeds!"
Richard Johnson: "We gave them a good run for their money!"
— Post-battle interview (For most of the interview, the blade was still going loudly, so Craig Charles and the Fluffy team had to speak over it until it stopped

At the end of the series, Fluffy was awarded with the Most Promising Newcomer award, beating S3 and Crushtacean to the prize.

"Fluffy had an absolutely destructive blade in its first appearance in Robot Wars. I thought it would go further - look at the damage done to Pussycat!"
— Jonathan Pearce reading the nominations for the Most Promising Newcomer awards

Series 6[]

"Steel frame, with a 20 kilo spinner, very destructive, fast at 20 miles an hour, manoeuvrable, but a petrol-driven weapon? What, in my arena? Are you mad?"
— Jonathan Pearce describes Fluffy

In its first round melee, Fluffy fought against three other returning teams to Robot Wars, Kan-Opener, Double Trouble and Demolition Man.

Philippa Forrester: "Fluffy, tell me, how are you going to cope up against; Double Trouble, Kan-Opener and Demolition Man?"
Peter Holroyd: "I think we're gonna cut them into small pieces!"
Philippa Forrester: "Do you? Have you got the weaponry to enable you to do so?"
Peter Holroyd: "We have got the weaponry to do that, yes."
— Pre-battle interview
Kan-Opener vs Double Trouble vs Demolition Man

Fluffy in its first-round battle

Fluffy started the battle by holding back from its opponents, allowing its spinner to get up to speed. As Kan-Opener attacked Demolition Man, Fluffy drove at Double Trouble, hitting its side. Double Trouble reversed away, backing into Kan-Opener, and Fluffy held back to get its spinner back up to speed, then slammed into the front of Demolition Man as Kan-Opener pulled it away from the wall. Fluffy's blade stopped on impact, so Fluffy reversed to get it spinning again. Kan-Opener tried to let go of Demolition Man, but one of its arms was stuck in Demolition Man's side. Fluffy took advantage, driving at Kan-Opener's side with its spinner, tearing a gash in the side and sending up a shower of sparks as it ran the blade along Kan-Opener's side and hit the back.

"Fluffy - low centre of gravity - has spun away, but has caused trouble to Kan-Opener. Look at this attack here, slicing into Kan-Opener! And that has opened a can of worms for those boys!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy immobilises Kan-Opener
Fluffy vs Kan-Opener

Fluffy leaves a gash in Kan-Opener's armour

This attack immobilised Kan-Opener, and it was pushed against the arena wall, still caught in the side of Demolition Man. Demolition Man had also broken down since Kan-Opener got its claw in its side. Fluffy hit the side of Kan-Opener as it lay immobile by the arena side wall, and Double Trouble also slammed into Kan-Opener's side as Fluffy drove past. Fluffy drove away from the side wall for another attack, and after Double Trouble was pulled away from Kan-Opener by Dead Metal, having got stuck on Kan-Opener's side, Fluffy hit Kan-Opener's side, but the blade became caught in Kan-Opener's armour, so Fluffy had to be pushed free by the House Robots.

"Has Kan-Opener now been immobilised? May well have been with that initial attack on it by Fluffy."
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy hits the immobile Kan-Opener

Sir Killalot pulled Kan-Opener free of Demolition Man, and pulled it to the floor flipper, where Refbot counted it out. As he did so, Double Trouble cut into Kan-Opener's side with its discs, and Fluffy charged into Double Trouble's side, sending up a shower of sparks. Demolition Man was also counted out by Refbot, and it was taken to the Drop Zone, leaving Fluffy and Double Trouble to go through to the second round.

"Poor Demolition Man, poor Kan-Opener! They got caught together, couldn't get apart, not even Refbot could get them apart! So by default, Fluffy and Double Trouble, they go through!"
— Craig Charles announces the result of the battle

In the second round, Fluffy fought eleventh seed and Fourth Wars Grand Finalist, Stinger.

Philippa Forrester: "Right, Fluffy team. You're already looking a bit depressed, so I hate to give you this news: Stinger is who you're up against!"
Richard Johnson: "Great!"
Philippa Forrester: "Oh dear, what does that mean for you?"
Richard Johnson: "I don't know, he's quite a hard robot to attack. It's just wheels and a long Stinger tail, so..."
Philippa Forrester: "And there's no body to get hold of."
Richard Johnson: "Exactly!"
— Pre-battle interview
Fluffy vs Stinger

Fluffy comes in for the attack which momentarily damaged Stinger's drive

Stinger started by driving at Fluffy, but as Fluffy drove forwards, it swerved to avoid Stinger, getting its blade up to speed. Fluffy turned around with its blade spinning, but Stinger turned around to avoid it, and Fluffy began spinning. Stinger swung its mace, but missed and Fluffy drove around it and hit one of the wheels. Stinger turned and slammed down its mace, but narrowly missed, and Fluffy drove away across the arena, then turned around. Fluffy drove at Stinger, clipping the side and knocking it aside and flipping it over. Fluffy drove around for another attack, and as Stinger drove at it, Fluffy hit its side, knocking it away. Stinger span on the spot, and Fluffy began a charge, but then stopped to avoid Stinger's spinning. Fluffy held back, waiting until Stinger stopped spinning, then hit Stinger's mace as it came to rest. Fluffy turned away and drove up the arena, whilst Stinger could only spin on the spot.

"Fluffy, waiting its moment to come onto the attack. Stinger is going around in circles, that's just about it. Fluffy's first attack really, of this second round clash, caused so much damage."
— Jonathan Pearce, just before Stinger's wheel begins working again
Stinger vs Fluffy

Stinger hits Fluffy

With its blade back up to full speed, Fluffy turned back at its opponent, and cautiously approached it. Stinger span on the spot, and Fluffy hit Stinger's side, but the blade merely stopped on impact. Stinger tried to tried to drive up Fluffy's side as Fluffy drove past and turned around, then drove away, getting its blade back up to speed. Fluffy drove into the centre of the arena, then turned to face Stinger, but as it approached, Stinger was now moving on both wheels, and it turned to avoid Fluffy, then drove into Fluffy's side, and on impact, Fluffy's blade came to halt and stopped working. Stinger hit Fluffy's top with its mace, and Fluffy reversed away, and turned away from Stinger as it tried to get its blade spinning again, but drove onto the Flame Pit. It managed to turn and drive off the flame pit, but Stinger drove at it and hit the top again. Fluffy turned around and drove at Stinger, but its blade had now fully stopped. Stinger began to spin, hitting Fluffy with its mace

"Fluffy, with the steel frame, difficult to penetrate, very destructive as well, but taking punishment from Stinger. I don't know how much destructive punishment. Down comes the mace again. Bang! Slam! Where's Fluffy going now?"
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy endures blows from Stinger's mace

Mr. Psycho hammers Fluffy

Fluffy withstood the blows, which didn't appear to damage it, but it was not moving much, and could not defend itself as Stinger turned and slammed into the top a couple of times with its mace. Fluffy reversed a little, then weakly drove at Stinger, but could not push its opponent, and Stinger span, hitting Fluffy's side with its mace, then span in the other direction, hitting Fluffy's back. Fluffy turned away, and drove away from Stinger, but drove into an empty CPZ, and Mr. Psycho came over. Mr. Psycho pinned Fluffy in the corner and slammed his hammer onto Fluffy's top. As Mr. Psycho reversed for another attack, Fluffy turned and tried to drive out of the arena, but as it reached the edge of the CPZ, it turned incorrectly, driving into Mr. Psycho's front. It reversed and turned, narrowly avoiding a second blow from Mr. Psycho's hammer. Fluffy drove back at Stinger, which drove at Fluffy's front, swinging over the mace, but narrowly missed. Fluffy tried to push Stinger, but couldn't move it, and Stinger swung over the mace, clipping Fluffy's top. Stinger reversed, and Fluffy drove after it, and Stinger missing with its mace, but then turned to Fluffy's side and hit the top.

"Seems to have lost some speed. Can get up to 20 miles an hour when its okay, but the Stinger boys, Kevin, Tim and Karl, making sure that Fluffy is having a few problems now! ...Stinger here now very much on top! You wouldn't have thought that a couple of minutes ago! Down comes the mace again! Kevin Scott, the captain, slamming down with the mace. It looks like a mighty pendulum and the pendulum of this battle has certainly swung towards Stinger!"

Stinger backed off as Refbot came over to count Fluffy out, and when his count was complete, Matilda pushed Fluffy off the Drop Zone, where it had coincidentally broken down, pushing it up the arena, then left it for Mr. Psycho to push it onto the floor flipper. Fluffy was thrown by the Floor Flipper, and Stinger drove into it as it landed.

"What a fight, what a fight! Fluffy, fluffs his lines! Gets immobilised, and flipped!"
— Craig Charles announces the winner of the battle

Fluffy was therefore eliminated from the Sixth Wars.

Craig Charles: "Fluffy, Fluffy, Fluffy. It all seemed to be going so well!"
Peter Johnson: "Yeah, we thought we were winning that, until something has gone wrong again, like last year."
Craig Charles: "Your disc {sic} started making a hell of a racket as it was going round."
Peter Johnson: "Yeah, I think it's been hitting something on the inside it shouldn't be hitting."
Craig Charles: "Bit of mangled metal there?"
Peter Johnson: "Possibly."
Craig Charles: "Disappointed? You thought you had a good chance though, didn't you?"
Peter Johnson: "Yeah. We did, yeah. We thought we disabled one of their wheels at one stage, but it seems to have got back working again."
Craig Charles: "Well they've been having lots of problems with their robots, and I thought if there's gonna be a chance, they're the eleventh seeds you see! If there's gonna be a chance, I thought this was it for you guys!"
Peter Johnson: "Yeah, so did we!"
— Post-battle interview

Fluffy returned for the UK vs Germany Special, which was also broadcast during German Robot Wars. In the first round, it faced the Scottish full-body spinner Corkscrew.

Philippa Forrester: "Fluffy, up against Corkscrew. That's an interesting combination."
Peter Holroyd: "It could be, it's sort of two spinners up against each other and they're a very tough robot, so we're not sure whether we can damage them, but we're gonna try and smash them up!"
— Pre-battle interview
Fluffy corkscrew

Fluffy knocks out Corkscrew's weapon

Both machines started by holding back, getting their spinners up to speed. Fluffy drove down the arena a little as it got its blade up to speed, then cautiously drove across the arena at Corkscrew, which had likewise got is spinning body up to speed and was cautiously approaching its opponent. Fluffy hit Corkscrew's spinning body, which knocked Fluffy back a little, and slowed its spinning blade, whilst doing nothing to stop Corkscrew's spinning body. Fluffy drove around Corkscrew, then turned around and drove away as it got its spinner back up to speed. When it was back up to speed, Fluffy drove back at Corkscrew, which reversed. Fluffy's blade briefly clipped Corkscrew as it reversed, causing some sparks, and Fluffy turned for another attack, but turned too far, exposing its side, allowing Corkscrew to hit the side, ripping off a small piece of armour. However, Corkscrew's body slowed, and it reversed, and Fluffy hit it with its spinning blade, knocking it against the wall, where Corkscrew stopped.

"What you will see is, with the Fluffy blade once it has struck its opponent, the blade will stop. Mind you, Corkscrew, has stopped dead!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy knocks Corkscrew against the wall

Fluffy turned around to get its blade back up to speed, and when Corkscrew moved away from the wall, Fluffy slammed into it before it could get up to speed, and this blow left Corkscrew immobile.

"Fluffy hit us again and the weapon stopped. The Fluffy weapon had put a dent into the side of Corkscrew and the force of the impact had broken the drive motor for the weapon off. We had no weapon"
— John Heatlie on the Corkscrew website[13]

Growler pushed it away from the CPZ, by the pit release button, and Fluffy hit it again with the spinning blade, the impact forcing Corkscrew against the pit release button. Fluffy drove up the arena, leaving Corkscrew to be counted out by Refbot, before being taken to the Floor Flipper and pitted by Growler, meaning that Fluffy was through to the next round.

"No pants? It was pants! It goes spinning out of the competition, whereas Fluffy, they display the spirit of '66!"
— Craig Charles announces the result of the battle

There in the second round, Fluffy met the similarly destructive 259, waging a horizontal spinner against a vertical spinner. When Philippa Forrester came over to interview the team, Peter Holroyd was tightening various parts of Fluffy's insides, which had come loose in the battle against Corkscrew.

Philippa Forrester: "You frightened of fluffy creatures?"
Adam Clark: "I believe vertical has sway over the horizontal, so I think the vertical disc will win out in this one!"
Jonathan Pearce: "Adam I don't know, I like the look of Fluffy's weaponry."
— Pre-battle interview with Adam Clark
259 fluffy

259 suffers damage from Fluffy

At the start of the battle, Fluffy turned and drove up the arena as it got its blade up to speed. 259 drove at it, but Fluffy was quick enough to drive around it, and drove down the arena. 259 turned around and drove after it, and Fluffy drove near the flame pit and turned to face 259. Fluffy drove around 259, and tried to hit 259's side, but 259 drove away as Fluffy got close. Both machines turned around to face each other, then drove at each other, with Fluffy hitting 259's front, then clipping the side, ripping off a small part of the front wheel.

"Fluffy's weaponry already building up to speed, so too 259's vertical disc. Intriguing this, isn't it, the difference in the weaponry?"
— Jonathan Pearce
259 drive belt

259's drive belt slipped and side skirt buckled

Fluffy drove past 259, which turned around, and Fluffy turned around and hit 259's front again, the impact knocking loose one of 259's left drive belt, and lifting up its right skirt, exposing the wheels. 259 tried to reverse, but with only one side working, it could only turn a little before stopping.

"...immediately, Fluffy bashing onto the side panels of 259, and... is that a drive belt, coming loose there for 259? It certainly seems to be for me, a drive belt for the wheels! The weaponry still moving, but what has gone wrong?"
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy knocks off a drive belt
Fluffy vs 259 KO UK vs

Fluffy's final blow on 259

Fluffy drove across the arena, then charged at 259, slamming into its front, ripping the other drive belt and breaking the other front wheel. 259 reversed, with the right drive belt falling off and the right front wheel wobbling, its support having been broken by Fluffy's attack. Only one side of 259 was working, so it reversed in a circle, and Fluffy hit the exposed right side. 259 struggled to drive at Fluffy, and Fluffy turned around and hit 259's front corner, ripping off the loose wheel, and the impact of Fluffy's spinning bar, coupled with the gyroscopic forces of 259's flywheel, flipped 259 onto its side.

"It was the extreme strength of Fluffy's onslaught - and another massive attack has sent 259 toppling! What ease! They simply tossed 259 aside! What ease! They simply thrust 259 aside. You are talking a hundred kilos there, being flicked, almost effortlessly. Look at that, they turn and bang! The impact of the weaponry, enormous from Fluffy! No way back for 259 there!"
— Jonathan Pearce assesses Fluffy's knock-out blow on 259

259 was left immobile on its side, and Refbot counted it out. The House Robots attacked, with Mr. Psycho hammering it, then Dead Metal cutting into the base. Dead Metal grabbed 259, dragging it up the arena, then pushed it down the arena, pushing it into Fluffy's side. Fluffy drove along with 259 as Dead Metal pushed its beaten opponent, but Fluffy's bar was not spinning, so it did not attack again. Fluffy turned away, but turned into Dead Metal's side, and Dead Metal drove over its bar as it pushed 259 into the pit release button, then pulled it back and pushed it into the pit as it opened.

"Fluffy, worthy winners. A real match for anything Germany can put up."
— Jonathan Pearce as 259 is pitted

Fluffy therefore qualified as the UK representative to fight the Germans.

Craig Charles: "Well it's anything but Fluffy lads, isn't it?"
Peter Holroyd: "Yeah, I mean that was amazing! We didn't expect that ourselves, that was the most destructive it's ever been!"
Craig Charles: "It moves at speed, that, that..."
Peter Holroyd: "Yeah, it's incredible, yeah."
— Hey lads, listen, you've earned the right to fight for your country, and you're fighting the Germans. Now I was gonna ask a favour, you couldn't change the name of your robot could you, just for one fight, and call it, say "Munich 2001" or something like that? Maybe call it "5-1"?[src]

Through to the final, Fluffy met the German representative Das Gepäck, for the chance to win the trophy.

"Fluffy will fight them in the arena, he'll fight them on the angle grinder, he'll fight them in the pit, and Fluffy will never, never, never, surrender!"
— Jonathan Pearce paraphrases Winston Churchill to back the United Kingdom
Fluffy das gepack

Fluffy cracks the spike of Das Gepäck

Fluffy started by driving down the arena, whilst Das Gepäck also held back. Fluffy turned around, and Das Gepäck drove across the arena, but held back from attacking Fluffy, and drove around Fluffy as it tried to charge at it. Fluffy turned to face Das Gepäck, but Das Gepäck turned away as Fluffy drove at it, so Fluffy turned around. Das Gepäck drove past Fluffy, which clipped the front with its spinning bar as it passed. Both competitors turned to face each other, and as they drove into each other, Fluffy's spinning bar tore off one of Das Gepäck's spikes, but did little damage to the body. The two competitors turned away from each other, and drove away for another attack, and when the two turned to face each other, Das Gepäck drove past, bumping past Fluffy's side as it drove up the arena. Fluffy was driving erratically, spinning in a circle, driving forwards, turning the other way, then spinning around, before lining up an attack on Das Gepäck when it drove down the arena. Fluffy hit Das Gepäck's side and the tyres, but did no damage, so quickly turned away. Das Gepäck drove across the arena, and as it did so, Fluffy turned around and clipped Das Gepäck side again. Fluffy drove down the arena, Das Gepäck drove to the side of the arena, turned around and charged at Fluffy, which swerved to dodge Das Gepäck's charge. Das Gepäck drove around the arena in a circle, and Fluffy chased after it, but Das Gepäck then turned and charged straight into Fluffy's front, withstanding the impact of Fluffy's blade.

"Very well balanced, and well set up, this final. By far and away the best two machines we've seen."
— Jonathan Pearce
Fluffy bash C02 Das Gepack

Fluffy and Das Gepäck stray too close to Sgt. Bash

Fluffy drove to the side of the arena by the flame pit, then drove at Das Gepäck, hitting the front and ripping off a small part. However, in doing so, it drove onto the flame pit. Das Gepäck drove down the arena, and Fluffy drove into the centre of the arena. Das Gepäck rammed into Fluffy's side, and it was at this moment that Fluffy's blade stopped working. Fluffy tried to turn away from Das Gepäck, but Das Gepäck turned with it and kept pushing. Das Gepäck couldn't push Fluffy far, so the two competitors reversed apart, and Fluffy drove around Das Gepäck. Das Gepäck chased after it, and Fluffy drove around Das Gepäck as it turned to face its opponent, but Das Gepäck quickly turned and got at Fluffy's side.

"They slam into Fluffy, and lock horns! They've got a grip here of Fluffy - no! UK machine breaks away! Trying to, I think, launch a side-on attack on Das Gepäck, in other words to get away from those spikes, one of which is wobbling and totally ineffective anyway."
— Jonathan Pearce

Das Gepäck pushes the weaponless Fluffy

Fluffy drove around Das Gepäck, and drove down the arena. chased it down the arena, but Fluffy drove away as it caught up, so Das Gepäck turned away and went to open the pit. Fluffy reversed after Das Gepäck, but then drove up the arena as Das Gepäck turned to chase after it. Fluffy swerved left, and Das Gepäck followed it, so Fluffy tried to drive around Das Gepäck, but Das Gepäck got at its side and pushed it towards the arena. Fluffy drove around to Das Gepäck's side, and Das Gepäck reversed with it, so Fluffy turned away. Fluffy tried to get away, but Sgt. Bash drove up the arena, driving towards the top CPZ, blocking Fluffy. Fluffy tried to reverse, but Das Gepäck got at its side. Fluffy turned around and, as its blade was no longer working, tried to push Das Gepäck down the arena. Fluffy pushed Das Gepäck a little, but Das Gepäck reversed towards the wall. Fluffy turned away and drove up the arena, and Das Gepäck drove around the pit then charged up the arena at Fluffy. Das Gepäck rammed into Fluffy's side, but Fluffy turned away, and Das Gepäck drove into Sgt. Bash.

"At this stage I can't pick this, it's too close! No great damage caused, or sustained. Reasonable level of driving ability throughout, has the Fluffy weaponry stopped? That could be decisive, if it does go to the Judges. Mind you the Das Gepäck weapon has hardly been effective throughout."
— Jonathan Pearce

The final push

Fluffy drove to the other side of the arena, and Das Gepäck drove after it, ramming into its front. Fluffy turned to prevent Das Gepäck pushing it, so Das Gepäck reversed, and rammed into Fluffy's side. Das Gepäck pushed Fluffy, which reversed away. Das Gepäck reversed for another charge, then rammed into Fluffy's side again. Das Gepäck pushed Fluffy, turning it around, but Fluffy turned away, so Das Gepäck reversed for another attack. As Das Gepäck chased after it, Fluffy reversed down the arena, but backed into Refbot, and Das Gepäck pushed Fluffy onto the flame pit. Fluffy quickly turned off of the flame pit, before time ran out.

"...I can't see a way for the Judges to make a decision. I couldn't, on what I've seen. That is so close!"
— Jonathan Pearce as the battle comes to an end

The battle was sent to a Judges' decision, who in an unprecedented move, declared the battle to be a draw, which prompted the audience booing. The one available trophy was given to the Das Gepäck team, but nevertheless Fluffy was declared the joint winner of the episode, with Craig Charles promising another trophy would be given to them. The Fluffy team were somewhat embarrassed to have not won the final for the UK, but praised the strength of Das Gepäck, having withstood their attacks.

Craig Charles: "Are you not ashamed of yourselves lads?"
Peter Johnson: "Thoroughly, yes!"
Craig Charles: "Thoroughly ashamed! I mean, these are the new kids on the block, you know, they've only just started building robots! You guys, experienced roboteers, the country was depending on you, and what do you go and do?"
Richard Johnson: "Just collapse!"
— Post-battle interview

Extreme 2[]

"Fluffy headed students? Never!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy enters the arena

In Extreme Series 2, Fluffy's only appearance was in the University Challenge, where it represented University College London. Fluffy was favoured to win the whole competition, and its first round battle was against Infinity, representing the University of Wales, and Tiberius 3, representing Loughborough University. Before the battle, the were concerned about Tiberius 3, as it was heavily armoured.

Philippa Forrester: "Okay, Fluffy team, representing UCL in London. Now, Loughborough University have threatened to squash your robot into the arena floor! How do you feel about that?"
Peter Holroyd: "Well, we'll see when we get into the arena, but I don't think that's gonna happen?"
Philippa Forrester: "How do you feel about Loughborough?"
Peter Johnson: "I've never actually heard of it before!"
— Pre-battle interview
UniversityChallengeRound1.2

Fluffy is caught in Tiberius 3's grip on the Flame Pit

At the start of the battle, Infinity charged at Tiberius 3, whilst Fluffy held back, getting its blade up to speed as it drove across to the middle of the arena. Tiberius 3 turned around and reversed into Fluffy, which tried hitting Tiberius 3's back, but Tiberius 3 withstood the impact, and Tiberius 3 reversed against Fluffy's side. The blade stopped on impact, and Fluffy tried to get it back up to speed, but as it tried to drive around Tiberius 3, Tiberius 3 turned, blocking it from getting away and pushing it against Infinity. Tiberius 3 pushed against Fluffy's side, trying to get underneath it to get it under the crusher, but the front wedge couldn't get under Fluffy's ground clearance. Infinity pushed against Fluffy, but as Tiberius 3 turned to try another attack, Fluffy managed to get away from the front of Tiberius 3, and Infinity drove into Tiberius 3, allowing Fluffy to drive away up the arena. However, this escape was short-lived, as Tiberius 3 pushed Infinity, then the two reversed away from each other, whilst Fluffy could not get its spinning bar back up to speed. Tiberius 3 drove after Fluffy, which drove around it, but Tiberius 3 chased after it, and soon got under the side, and grabbed it with its crusher.

"The Fluffy team, in the jaws of a dilemma, and the jaws of Tiberius 3!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Tiberius 3 grabs onto Fluffy
Tiberius III vs Fluffy

Fluffy is hoisted into the air by Tiberius 3

Infinity rammed into the side of Tiberius 3, but Tiberius 3 kept a firm hold of Fluffy and pushed it into an angle grinder, before dragging it over the Flame Pit. After holding Fluffy on the flames, Tiberius 3 raised the crusher, but Fluffy was caught on the end of the crusher. Refbot reversed into Tiberius 3, but this did not shake Fluffy loose, so Tiberius 3 reversed. It raised the crusher, lifting Fluffy up, but it did not fall off the end.

"Tiberius locked onto Fluffy! They fought in a couple of UK Championships in Robot Wars, Fluffy, I remember they were beaten in a Heat Final by Pussycat once upon a time, and they simply cannot get away from Tiberius! And they're on the flame pit - interesting for a petrol-driven robot! No wonder the Refbot's having a close look!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Tiberius 3 holds Fluffy over the flame pit
Tiberius vs Infinity vs Fluffy

Fluffy is dropped into the Pit

Infinity tried to push Tiberius 3, but couldn't get enough traction, and this did not shake Fluffy free. Tiberius 3 carried Fluffy over to the Drop Zone, and Infinity rammed into Fluffy. Refbot pushed Fluffy, and Infinity drove into it again. but Fluffy was still caught on the end of Tiberius 3's crusher. Infinity drove over Fluffy's front bar, drove past, then turned around, charging into Tiberius 3's side, then pushing against Fluffy. Infinity pushed Fluffy and Tiberius 3 so that Fluffy was over the pit, and Growler activated the Pit release. Infinity kept pushing against Fluffy, which left one of its wheels hanging over the edge of the pit as the pit opened. Infinity kept pushing against Tiberius 3's front and Fluffy, whilst Tiberius 3 tried unsuccessfully to drop Fluffy. Refbot broke the stalemate by getting behind Tiberius 3 and pushing it, causing Fluffy and Tiberius 3 to topple into the pit.

"Now who's gonna go down? Fluffy, Infinity? Infinity, Fluffy? Which one? Someone's got to fall here... It's Fluffy! They're out!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Refbot pushes Tiberius 3 and Fluffy into the pit

As a result, Fluffy was eliminated in the first round. The team revealed backstage that their petrol engine had stalled shortly before the match began, reducing the weapon's power, contributing to its loss.

Philippa Forrester: "Now, we talked earlier, with the other teams, about you having a petrol engine, and the great power that that gave you, the problem is you can't restart a petrol engine once it's stopped."
Peter Johnson: "No, there's a problem there, isn't there?"
Philippa Forrester: "Had you thought that through?"
Peter Johnson: "Obviously not, no!"
Philippa Forrester: "(Laughs) Not well enough!"
Richard Johnson: "Next year, next year!"

Jayne Middlemiss: "Doesn't look very fluffy to me, why is it called that?"
Richard Johnson: "Because it's cute and cuddly!"
Jayne Middlemiss: "I don't know what you've been cuddling but I ain’t want to cuddle that!"
— The team give an ironic description of their robot in their pre-battle interview in Series 7

Fluffy was in a first round melee with the rebuilt Killer Carrot 2, Team UK Robotics new robot Constrictor and newcomer Scarey-Go-Round in Series 7.

"Has to lose its soft image from its previous defeats in the wars..."
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy is introduced
Fluffy Scarey Go Round

Fluffy cuts into Scarey-Go-Round

Fluffy started by holding back from its opponents, getting its blade up to speed. Whilst Constrictor and Killer Carrot 2 fought together, Scarey-Go-Round started spinning and drove at Fluffy, but hit the side, cutting a very large gash in the armour, which stopped the outer body from spinning. Scarey-Go-Round turned away, and Fluffy tried to drive towards the arena centre. Scarey-Go-Round drove at it as it passed, but hit Fluffy's blade, which caused more damage. Fluffy drove away, getting its blade back up to full speed, and Scarey-Go-Round drove after it. Fluffy turned to face Scarey-Go-Round as it closed in, hitting it with the spinning bar, which ripped into the side and sent Scarey-Go-Round spinning aside. Scarey-Go-Round drove at Fluffy's side, but couldn't spin, so turned away and drove at Constrictor, which was being pushed by Killer Carrot 2. Fluffy started spinning around, trying to drive forwards, and Scarey-Go-Round left the other two competitors to drive back at Fluffy. Scarey-Go-Round drove at Fluffy's side, but Fluffy turned and clipped Scarey-Go-Round's side, doing more damage.

"The toys are flying off all over the place, the fairground attachments; the rocket, the car, the tank, the boat!"
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy rips into Scarey-Go-Round, riping into the armour and knocking off the decorations

However, Fluffy was no longer able to drive forward. It continued to spin around, as Killer Carrot 2 drove down the arena, bumping into it, then drove around to Fluffy's side. Killer Carrot 2 tried to get its flipper underneath, but Fluffy continued to spin, and turned into Killer Carrot 2's side, knocking it aside with the spinning bar. Killer Carrot 2 drove away after Constrictor, and Fluffy continued to spin, spinning one way, then the other, and smoke began to rise from Fluffy early on.

"Fluffy is smoking, something's burning out inside! They're spinning, but they're not moving forward."
— Jonathan Pearce
Fluffy smoke

Smoke pours out of Fluffy

Fluffy span around, but was only moving on one wheel. It continued to spin as Killer Carrot 2 fought with Constrictor, until Killer Carrot 2 drove down the arena, trying to flip Scarey-Go-Round, then turned into Fluffy. Fluffy turned around, but its blade slowed to a stop. Killer Carrot 2 drove around Fluffy, then tried to get under it, but Fluffy slid off the flipper as it pushed, so Killer Carrot 2 went after Scarey-Go-Round instead. Fluffy turned to face Constrictor, but then stopped. Constrictor nudged the inert Fluffy, and Killer Carrot 2 drove at them, but then Sgt. Bash came out of his CPZ and grabbed Fluffy with his front claw. Killer Carrot 2 tried to help Fluffy, first using its flipper on Sgt. Bash, which only lifted up his shell a little, then pushing against his side, which forced him to let go. Fluffy regained some movement, turning away from Sgt. Bash, and Constrictor drove into it. Killer Carrot 2 opened the pit, then backed into Fluffy. Fluffy continued to spin, but did manage to drive forwards a little, but then kept spinning.

"Fluffy had no pushing factor on Killer Carrot 2, but has suddenly found some life, and zip, Fluffy. Too little, too late, perhaps, should it go to the Judges?"
— Jonathan Pearce as Fluffy starts moving again
Sgt bash grabs fluffy

Sgt. Bash grabs hold of Fluffy

Constrictor drove at Fluffy's side, but before it could try and lift, Killer Carrot 2 pushed it away, wedging its flipper on top of Fluffy. Killer Carrot 2 turned away and Fluffy continued to spin, but then stopped on the flame pit. Killer Carrot 2 fought with Constrictor, but then Killer Carrot 2 charged at Fluffy just before the battle ended. Constrictor tried to block Killer Carrot 2, driving into Fluffy. Time ran out, and despite Fluffy and Scarey-Go-Round both being immobile, the battle had to go to a Judges' decision, as no robot had been counted out.

"...the Judges will have to decide though, and they've all done tremendously well to last the whole bout!"
— Jonathan Pearce as the battle ends

Despite the damage Fluffy had done earlier in the battle, it was deemed to have lost mobility for too long, so the Judges eliminated Fluffy, along with Scarey-Go-Round. In addition, this would be Fluffy's final Robot Wars appearance.

Trivia[]

Fluffy S7

Official Series 7 photo

  • Fluffy was one of only ten robots to debut in Extreme 1 and then fight in one of the main competitions, not counting Typhoon. The others were 3 Stegs 2 Heaven, Axe-Awe, Comengetorix, Fighting Torque, NEAT Machine, Spawn Again, Sub-Version, The Executioner and Draven.
  • Fluffy is one of two unused reserves to have been acknowledged as such on the show, the other being Wolverine.
  • Of all the robots to be awarded Most Promising Newcomer, Fluffy was the only one who beat out a robot that made it further in the competition (S3).
    • It was the only Most Promising Newcomer that failed to reach the Semi-Finals the series they were awarded the honour (Tornado and Dantomkia both reached the second round of the Semi-Finals in Series 4 and 6 respectively).
    • It was also the only Most Promising Newcomer who wasn't knocked out of the competition by the Number one seed in the series they won the award (Tornado was beaten by Chaos 2, while Dantomkia was beaten by Razer, whereas Fluffy was beaten by the second seeds, Pussycat).
  • In both of Fluffy's appearances in Extreme, it appeared in the same episode as Behemoth.
  • Fluffy is one of five robots to appear in both series of Extreme and not win a battle in either series. The others are Doom, Mammoth, Sumpthing and Velocirippa.
    • Of those five, Fluffy is the only one to have won any battles at all, whereas the other four all failed to win a battle despite multiple attempts (excluding Sumpthing advancing through its melee in Series 4).
  • The only House Robots which never shared the arena with Fluffy were Cassius Chrome and Matilda.
  • Both of the seeds that beat Fluffy (Pussycat and Stinger) fought each other in the Extreme 1 All-Stars.
  • Out of the three Series 5 debutants that reached the heat final in that series, Fluffy is the only one not to have fought a former UK champion at any point.
  • While generally considered to be a pioneer of modern bar spinners, Fluffy was not the first UK competitor armed with such a weapon. Series 3 competitor Hammertron featured a similar 'spinning hammer', though the significance of its own weapon was not acknowledged in its only appearance.
  • Fluffy's first round victory in Series 6 was the only time it won a battle that wasn't a one on one battle.
