Heat the Ninth ditches the traditional battle format, and instead sends us into the realms of sport. With the virus cancelling everything, we need any opportunity to play the beautiful game, so here we go as we send 8 robots into the Robotic Soccer tournament. Head-to-head matches where the winner is the one which scores the most goals. In case of a draw, the judges will award the win to whichever robot was the more aggressive attacker, not the best defender. After all, this is Robot Wars... Get ready to hear Martin Tyler shouting "AGG-RO-BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTT". Robots will not be allowed to add anything not used in Series 4 to help guide the football to the robot.

Round 1

Vote for whichever robot you think will score the most goals. Please finish your vote with a score after 5 minutes. This doesn't really matter, but is just a bit of fun to emphasise the difference of this format.

Bigger Brother vs Razer

Votes for Bigger Brother
  1. The first thing I need to say about this heat is that it is the only one with "chosen" robots in it. When I did the first randomisation, any robot drawn into the other two trial heats (Sumo Basho and Pinball) which actually did those trials in Series 4 were taken out and put in this heat. So all these robots were originally drawn in trial heats anyway, we just get to judge them rather than just say seen it. With that out the way, Bigger Brother's big wide wedge at the front will probably be really good at pushing and guiding the football around, and Bigger Brother is fast and nippy enough that it could out-drive Razer enough times to score an extra goal over Razer. Razer's crusher either open or closed will not be ideal to bat the ball around, which I think will make it tough to have enough control on the ball to score enough times. 2-1 to Bigger Brother. Jimlaad43(talk) 07:57, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  2. I do get the logic behind Jimlaad's decision to move some robots out of the Pinball and into the Soccers and it probably was the right call. One slightly unfortunate aspect is that Razer would have been a 100% guaranteed elimination if it remained in the Pinball with its original score, although to be fair you could also argue that Razer would try harder in the main competition and not go after Sir Killalot. Here, I think Razer and Bigger Brother are quite evenly matched, much moreso than the Series 5 encounter. I also think that Razer with its modified hooks from Series 2 would dominate the heat and win this easily, but with a fair no-modifications policy, Razer loses this for me. The entire wedge is too slippery, and Bigger Brother isn't too much better, but it at least has the advantage in width. Razer won't necessarily fall at this stage, but I suspect it's on the horizon! 2-1 (Bigger Brother). TOAST 10:41, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  3. 2-0 to Bigger Brother. Without the hooks, I genuinely see Razer struggling to score. At the very least, I can see Bigger Brother somewhat trapping the ball with its flipper, enabling it to control the pace of the game, scoring two crucial goals to see off the crusher. 1. Who's to say Razer won't add another attachment to its crusher like it did in Series 2? It could potentially be close, but I think Razer will pull away with a slight lead...I wanna say 3-2. CrashBash (talk) 08:01, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
OK, I just now noticed Jim's comment, and fair enough, maybe it can't use the attachment, but I still think Razer should take it - it's a very well controlled machine after all.
Despite me reading that paragraph several times over, I didn't see it either!. Adster1005 08:32, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  2. I agree completely with Crash, who just beat me to typing that up. I also think Razer is a bit more controlled, even without the bar. 3-2, same as Crash.Adster1005 08:04, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  3. Yeah, we've seen how well Razer was able to play the "robotic soccar" when against multiple opponents and whilst it had an attachment, this attachment was nothing more than a flimsy bit of wiring, Razer used its wedge more than the actual attachment so there's that. Razer to overwhelmly beat Bigger Brother through control, speed and even design. A MAJOR point I have to stess that I feel the Bigger Brother voters are completely missing is the Series 2 performance and how little of an impact the wires were. I insist people rewatch it before going the whole "it won't have attachments therefore it must lose" mentality. In the short performance, not only does the wire attachment literally make NO CONTACT but it was all to to with the wedge, Razer was speedy enough to charge straight in and slam the ball against the side wall (which was admittingly sent in by Dead Metal) Another minor detail is Bigger Brother's slow speed in Series 4/BattleBots which in a way resulted in its poor performance in the competition, so yeah Razer will beat it by speed alone despite the arguably better wedge. 3-1 Diotoir the son of nemesis (talk) 08:45, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  4. The ball won't be the only thing key here. A good portion of Robotic Soccer - especially in one vs. ones was the machines 'tackling' each other. Razer is driven superbly, and even if it is not always in possession, I'd bet on it to intercept a lot of Bigger Brother's attempted attacks. Bigger Brother should score at some stage, but Razer to pace itself the best. Bigger Brother 1-2 Razer. NJGW (talk) 14:11, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  5. 2-1 to Razer. It strikes me as a solid defender and a reasonably good attacker. Bigger Brother unlucky, it'd have beaten another. Hogwild94 (talk) 17:42, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  6. Good match to start things off, but I think Razer's got the edge. It's faster and more nimble, particularly at this stage in Bigger Brother's life - it's not yet the beast that won the football gold in Techno Games 2003. Bigger Brother's probably got the better design for football, but Razer does effectively have two 'pockets' in this form, one either side of the wedge where the wheels stick out, that should help quite a bit with dribbling and ball control. I'll back the Bigger Brother 1-3 Razer scoreline, with Bigger Brother getting a late consolation. Combatwombat555 (talk) 13:51, May 20, 2020 (UTC)
Winner: Razer (3-6)

Destruct-A-Bubble vs Scorpion

Destruct-A-Bubble Scorpion
Destruct a bubble series4
Scorpion S4
Votes for Destruct-A-Bubble Votes for Scorpion
  1. Scorpion could potentially do quite well here, it has a great shaped front to hold the ball in between the protruding saws which it can use to keep the ball. Destruct-A-Bubble has size on its side, but that's about it. Scorpion may struggle to score past what's effectively a Sumo wrester in goal - large but not the most athletic if it has to move quickly to a side - but it will find a way past eventually. Scorpion to eventually monster this 0-3. Jimlaad43(talk) 07:57, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  2. I'm gonna say 2-0 in favour of Scorpion. Both are ponderous to the point that goal-scoring will be difficult, but Scorpion's design makes it well suited for this. CrashBash (talk) 08:02, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  3. Scorpion to win 2-1, two goals of it's own accord, and then one which has bounced off DaB to take it. Adster1005 08:08, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  4. Damn, DaB never gets a break in this arena competitions, it's round and not really suited to control the ball whereas Scorpion has an ideal shape. 3-0 Diotoir the son of nemesis (talk) 08:47, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  5. Now then, I certainly agree that Scorpion's shape is quite conducive to the soccer ball, and it is the more likely to score a goal. However with scoring a goal still requiring a fair amount of control, and the flames of Sgt. Bash running amok, I think it will ultimately fail to score after being set ablaze. Naturally, I certainly don't think Destruct-A-Bubble will be scoring either. After a dull match made entertaining only by Sgt. Bash, the judges award Scorpion the win after earning more touches in the goalless encounter. Scorpion (0-0). TOAST 10:42, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  6. I think Scorpion's shape should allow it to eventually deflect an attempt into the back of the net, but I can't see it dominating this. Scorpion just doesn't accelerate in straight lines fast enough to keep the ball under control. This will be a lot of bumping and barging by both machines, with Scorpion either winning by one goal, or through most possession. Destruct-A-Bubble 0-1 Scorpion. NJGW (talk) 14:14, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  7. 2-0 to Scorpion. It's easy got the upper hand with the curved front, and Destruct-A-Bubble is rather slow and its awkwardly shaped front will make it hard to launch a meaningful attack. Hogwild94 (talk) 17:44, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  8. 1-0 to Scorpion. A really dull battle, but I will say the curved front will trap the ball, enabling it to eventually score at some point as Destruct-A-Bubble begins to slow down even more. SpaceManiac888 (Talk) 18:29, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  9. Destruct-A-Bubble 0-1 Scorpion - Destruct-A-Bubble's been done here, it's such an awkward shape for ball control. Scorpion's shape means it should be able to control the ball better, and it should score one eventually despite its other shortcomings. Combatwombat555 (talk) 13:51, May 20, 2020 (UTC)

Votes for Henry 2 Votes for S.M.I.D.S.Y.
  1. S.M.I.D.S.Y. will push the ball and Henry 2 away with ease here, using its twin scoops to create some sort of L shape with the top one to splat the ball away from Henry and keep scoring. 0-4. Jimlaad43(talk) 07:57, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  2. Henry is just very hard to access given how quickly it died, but given S.M.I.D.S.Y.'s quick speed, it should take a nice healthy lead. I wanna say 3-1. CrashBash (talk) 08:03, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  3. S.M.I.D.S.Y. is well controlled, and will do very well here. 0-4 like Jim. Adster1005 08:09, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  4. Nothing much to add, S.M.I.D.S.Y. to dominate. 4-0 Diotoir the son of nemesis (talk)
  5. Truly an unusual heat where S.M.I.D.S.Y. has a distinct edge over the likes of Razer and Bigger Brother, but S.M.I.D.S.Y. is a real-world Football champion thanks to Techno Games. Yes, that hasn't happened yet, and also yes, it was teamed up with Tornado in its championship campaign. But the evidence of potential is staring us in the face and S.M.I.D.S.Y. has to progress. I do, however, think that Henry 2 is one of the better footballers in this heat too with a good shape and pace. After a genuine bit of defence and midfielding from the two machines actively trying to stop the other from scoring, we finish with three goals total, a lot lower than it would be if either one of these machines were facing something like Destruct-A-Bubble. 2-1 (S.M.I.D.S.Y.) TOAST 10:42, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  6. Toast virtually summed it up. Henry 2 1-2 S.M.I.D.S..Y. NJGW (talk) 14:15, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  7. 4-1 to S.M.I.D.S.Y.. The robot from Cyberspace is a serious favourite for this; it races out into a 4-0 lead before allowing Henry a last minute consolation. Hogwild94 (talk) 17:45, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  8. 2-0 to S.M.I.D.S.Y., where I see England vs Trinidad and Tobago vibes, whereby although the winner is superior, it will need to work extremely hard to secure a late victory against the plucky underdog. Ultimately, I eventually see Henry 2 tiring out after some brave defending, enabling S.M.I.D.S.Y. to score two late goals. SpaceManiac888 (Talk) 18:29, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  9. Also agree with Toast, to be honest. Henry 2 1-2 S.M.I.D.S.Y. Combatwombat555 (talk) 13:51, May 20, 2020 (UTC)

101 vs Killerhurtz

101 Killerhurtz

Killerhurtz
Votes for 101
  1. I'm gonna reverse Jim's vote and say 101 wins 2-1. Its flatter front and slightly better control makes it much more well suited for the actual footballing stuff. CrashBash (talk) 08:04, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  2. I'm going to say 101, for the same reasons as Crash, but with a score of 3-1, with both being aggressive, but I see Killerhurtz making one or two drives that then deflect off of 101, and giving the goal to 101. Whatever happens here, we're going to end up with three or four "good" semi-finalists. Adster1005 08:12, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  3. Killerhurtz is speedy and aggressive, but poorly controlled. 101 is ideally controlled and much smoother in movement speed and therefore will get the ball in more times.3-2. Diotoir the son of nemesis (talk) 08:53, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  4. This really just comes down to a flat front vs a pointed one, which is going to make dribbling the ball a lot easier. 101's tracks also allow it to pivot much easier than Killerhurtz, who, as seen in battles with Chaos 2 and Cerberus, has a wider turning circle. Wouldn't put it past the machines to just get a single goal between them - 1-0. Toon Ganondorf (t c) 09:32, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
Votes for Killerhurtz
  1. This match is actually really close. I'd say Killerhurtz is going to be quicker to attack and defend, but its car steering and pointed front means it'll not have as much control of the ball as 101 would. I can see both robots getting on the scoreboard, but a well timed slam on the ball by Killerhurtz will see the ball ping past 101 near the end and it'll take a close victory. 1-2. Jimlaad43(talk) 07:57, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  2. In the current votes, Killerhurtz's speed is something that has been taken into consideration when it comes to offence. For me, however, the capability of the defence has been overlooked - a common problem among football fans. With such a speed advantage over 101 and a competent driver in John Reid, Killerhurtz is extremely capable of preventing 101's shots from happening. I completely agree that Killerhurtz's angled front is a hindrance to it scoring goals, but it's going to make 101's life hell. A single goal decides this one when John Reid finally sinks it. Killerhurtz (1-0). TOAST 10:43, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  3. Killerhurtz is a super aggressive machine, and it showed in BattleBots and Robot Wars that it can use that bladed front to charge just as well as it made use of its axe. This will start pretty close, but over time I'll go with Killerhurtz to win the physical battle with 101, potentially even causing some wear to 101's drive on one side, and then going on to win overall. 101 1-3 Killerhurtz. NJGW (talk) 14:17, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  4. Killerhurtz on a judges decision after a thrilling 3-3 draw! Both these robots would be pretty good attackers, Killerhurtz slightly better attacking but also a lesser defender too. Killerhurtz's attacks will likely have been more spectacular, so it gets the vote. Hogwild94 (talk) 17:47, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  5. 2-1 to Killerhurtz. I can see it at times having lapses in control early on, thus enabling 101 to take the lead. But as we saw in the Pinball, once Killerhurtz got its bearings straight, it was consistently accurate in what it set out to do. I can see its quicker pace and better defence might overturning the deficit before the Judges need to intervene. SpaceManiac888 (Talk) 18:29, May 19, 2020 (UTC)
  6. 101's got the better design, but Killerhurtz has so much more speed, and I think 101 will struggle to score many past a Killerhurtz defence (and Killerhurtz might end up poaching a goal or two by sneaking a final touch). 101 1-2 Killerhurtz Combatwombat555 (talk) 13:51, May 20, 2020 (UTC)
Winner: Killerhurtz (4-6)

  1. Scorpion just isn't as quick or good as Killerhurtz, so it will have the ball taken from it at every opportunity, despite the good shape at the front to dribble the ball with. Killerhurtz to score 3 or 4 goals without an answer. Jimlaad43(talk) 12:49, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
  2. Yeah, this is going to be a fairly straightforward win, and would have been for whoever got Scorpion. I'll say 4-0 in Killerhurtz's favour. CrashBash (talk) 12:50, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
  3. 3 good semi-finalists means one has to go here. Killerhurtz to be the more aggressive with the ball for about a 5-0 scoreline. Adster1005 12:51, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
  4. Killerhurtz is fast and should score a Hell of a lot more faster than Scorpion can, although I still don't think its control will be good...3-0 Diotoir the son of nemesis (talk) 13:09, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
  5. Not a four-way final like the real Series 3? 4-0 (Killerhurtz) TOAST 13:21, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
  6. Killerhurtz will randomly immobilise Scorpion with too-hard a slam, and then score a few. After this, it'll just muck around by attacking the House Robots. Killerhurtz 3-0 Scorpion. NJGW (talk) 16:38, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
  7. Killerhurtz impales Scorpion with a powerful charge, can't get loose, and is forced to spend the rest of the match with Scorpion stuck to its front end. Any goals are therefore attributed to Scorpion. Killerhurtz's got so much more speed, Scorpion just won't have an answer. In a 5 minute match, Killerhurtz is going to run rampant. Killerhurtz 5-0 Scorpion Combatwombat555 (talk) 16:46, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
  8. If Scorpion was as quick as Killerhurtz, this'd be a close one. As it is, Killerhurtz will defend very well, and score at least a couple of goals without reply. 3-0 sounds about right. Hogwild94 (talk) 17:32, May 21, 2020 (UTC)

Votes for S.M.I.D.S.Y.
  1. S.M.I.D.S.Y. has the dual scoops at the front which it can utilise perfectly to shove the ball around and away from Razer whenever it likes. Razer may be quicker and better at turning, but its shape really sucks for controlled and accurate hits on the ball, meaning everything it does will be a bit random. S.M.I.D.S.Y. to turn up the heat and pressure Razer away, using the scoop to hold the ball and bat it where it wants, taking a 2-1 win. Jimlaad43(talk) 12:49, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
  2. Well we have a Refbot now so I think we can rule out any illegal attacks. Both to do very well, but S.M.I.D.S.Y. edges it out on more touches of the ball. 3-3 (S.M.I.D.S.Y.) TOAST 13:24, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
  3. S.M.I.D.S.Y. is a tad quicker than Bigger Brother, and quicker than any of Razer's opponents in Series 2. I expect it to just about edge a very good match 3-2. Hogwild94 (talk) 17:33, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
Votes for Razer
  1. Again, I feel myself reversing a role here. I'm sure S.M.I.D.S.Y. will certainly start with a good goal, but something bothers me - watching its pinball round, it seemed like it ended up struggling a fair amount for control, meaning it took forever to do something as simple as knocking a few barrels over. As the fight wears on, I feel this will be a more crucial hinderance, with Razer taking advantage. I'd say 2-1 in favour of Razer...but then, who's to say that Razer wouldn't immediately go full-offence, take a massive bite out of S.M.I.D.S.Y. and, in all likeliness, kill it in one shot? Even in the actual competition, robots often attacked each other to give themselves an advantage - remember Evil Weevil KO'ing Gnasher? CrashBash (talk) 12:53, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
The aim of this heat is to judge just on footballing skills, no attacks will be allowed in it. Jimlaad43(talk) 14:37, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
  2. This will be a close one, but I think Razer was controlled well in S4, and maybe faster than S.M.I.D.S.Y. (I will strike that if it is wrong), so I have faith in Razer sneaking in a few goals off of the back of S.M.I.D.S.Y., so I'll go a 2-3 scoreline to Razer, with a last minute winner taking it for the Bournemouth boys. Adster1005 12:55, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
  3. Very close one, and one I'm not fully decided on just yet. But for now, I'll give an edge to Razer. I can see Razer nicking ahead of S.M.I.D.S.Y. in a couple of penalty areas scraps with its wedge prising underneath its opponent while both jostle for the ball. S.M.I.D.S.Y. 2-3 Razer. NJGW (talk) 16:41, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
  4. Yeah, I'm with that. S.M.I.D.S.Y. will start well, but the slightly iffy control and front end that's not actually that conducive to good ball control (the ball's liable to ping off at a funny angle unless S.M.I.D.S.Y. hits it directly head-on) means that it'll squander a few chances and allow Razer back into it. S.M.I.D.S.Y. 2-3 Razer Combatwombat555 (talk) 16:58, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
  5. A very tough match but I have come up with a decision. S.M.I.D.S.Y. was a good competitor in Techno Games but I feel its improved reliability and the style/type of scoop it had may have been a factor (i.e. the Series 6/Extreme 2 straight wedge scoop) Razer to be faster and more likely to be the aggressor.3-2 Diotoir the son of nemesis (talk) 19:55, May 21, 2020 (UTC)
  6. 1-0 to Razer, seeing as it will probably expose S.M.I.D.S.Y.'s lack of decisiveness in this one. No clean sweep hopefuls in this heat remain. SpaceManiac888 (Talk) 12:44, May 22, 2020 (UTC)

  1. This soccer match should actually be really close. Both robots should be good at shunting the ball about and scoring goals. Ally Gator has a wedged front with two spikes, both of which should be better at holding the ball on its front, and giving it maybe just one extra opportunity to score. 1. Even against Killerhurtz, Razer still has the worst front end for hitting and controlling a ball.
