Here is the place to discuss anything about Random Format Series 4.

Judges

If you wish to be a judge for this tournament, please sign up below. Jimlaad43(talk) 13:50, April 7, 2020 (UTC)

You know I'll be happy to give this a shot. CrashBash (talk) 13:53, April 7, 2020 (UTC)
Let's give Adster a chance, if they want to become a judge for this tournament. SpaceManiac888 (Talk) 15:48, April 7, 2020 (UTC)
I almost put my name down, but I wanted to see if any current judges wanted to stay on, so please only consider me if Toast steps down. Adster1005 17:08, April 7, 2020 (UTC)
I'll step down if Adster wants to give it a go. CrashBash (talk) 20:07, April 7, 2020 (UTC)
I don't mind if you want to stay on. I don't think its fair for you to not be a judge because I only want to. After all, you put your name down first, and you do a good job. Adster1005 22:03, April 7, 2020 (UTC)

Much as I'm unaware of how Series 4 was so suddenly selected as the series of choice (I was waiting for a proper discussion so that I could've proposed running it Fantasy Audited War style before otherwise plumping for Series 5), I will judge. TOAST 19:57, April 7, 2020 (UTC)

You have me to blame for that. I proposed Series 4 since that was still a time when some form of trials were still being held, so it seemed like it might be easier to judge. Plus, I thought it'd be fun to use some "classic-era" robots. Jim just took to it. CrashBash (talk) 20:07, April 7, 2020 (UTC)
Series 4 is a good series to do audited/fantasy series with, because very few 'big name' robots/teams are missing, including if you expand to include F2Qs; it's fun to do if you do, like I do, 'Series 4, but a year later', with all robots in their Series 5 form, if they have one. Hogwild94 (talk) 22:08, April 7, 2020 (UTC)

Extra robots

I will be including both Onslaught and V-Max in this tournament, as well as the five extras from the War of Independence. Jimlaad43(talk) 13:50, April 7, 2020 (UTC)

Trials choice

We have 102 robots in Series 4. 80 of these will be in the regular heats.

  • Series 1/2 Gauntlet, Trial, Arena heat (6)
  • Series 3/5 H2H heat (8)
  • Series 4 3-way melee heat (6)
  • Dutch Wars/Semi-Finals Losers melee heat (6)
  • Series 6/7 4-way melee heat (8)
  • Series 8/9 Round Robin heat (8)
  • Series 10 Redemption bracket (6)
  • Annihilator heat (6)
  • Tag Team heat (Double the robots so two heat winners) (16)
  • 10-Robot-Rumble heat (10)

This leaves 22 robots, who will compete in groups into some of these trial tournaments.

  • Challenge Belt format
  • Pinball tournament
  • Sumo Basho Tournament
  • Gauntlet runs only tournament
  • Robotic Soccer tournament

Which trials do we want to do, and how many robots in each? Jimlaad43(talk) 13:50, April 7, 2020 (UTC)

Comments

If we want to have 16 heat winners, then we need to use all of those trials, with at least four robots in each. The Challenge Belt might be a little difficult, so maybe we could adjust the rules so that, instead of qualifying after three rounds, the last robot to hold the belt after all robots have competed automatically goes through. With this in mind, I propose that six of the robots compete in the Challenge Belt, and there are four in each of the non-combat trials. CrashBash (talk) 14:00, April 7, 2020 (UTC)

Alternatively, if you want to have a twelve robot semi-final, you could incorporate numerous trials to give you the one remaining semi-finalist we need. The way I see it is as follows -
  1. The 22 robots are paired up in the Sumo Basho competition, with each other instead of Shunt.
  2. The 11 winners then compete in the Pinball Warrior Tournament.
  3. The top four scoring robots go through to the Soccer tournament, and the first robot to score goes through to the semi final.

Just a proposition. CrashBash (talk) 14:25, April 7, 2020 (UTC)

Challenge Belt will be whoever gets drawn into it fights in that order, and whoever has hold of it at the end wins the heat. So the robots drawn first have to battle through everyone to get through, whereas the last robot drawn will only have to beat one robot to take the heat victory.
I would be happy with three of these tournaments being chosen for 14 heat winners if it means the heats are higher quality. Soccer really needs 8 robots to be worth it for example. If we get 14 heat winners, I just choose a 8 robot formatted heat and a 6 robot formatted heat for the Semis. The Grand Final is the only one I'm expecting to run as normal. Jimlaad43(talk) 14:28, April 7, 2020 (UTC)
Well, we could have eight in a soccer, seven running the pinball and seven in a Sumo against Shunt. CrashBash (talk) 15:32, April 7, 2020 (UTC)
That's probably the best solution. Jimlaad43(talk) 15:43, April 7, 2020 (UTC)
With that solution, perhaps we should try not to have too many machines that already competed in the Pinball and Sumo competitions. SpaceManiac888 (Talk) 15:56, April 7, 2020 (UTC)
On a similar note, if we have 14 semi-finalists with eight in one semi final and six in the other, if possible, I'd suggest keeping them apart as much as possible based on format. So, for example, have the robots who fought in a six-format heat go into the eight-format semi-final, and vise-versa. CrashBash (talk) 17:04, April 7, 2020 (UTC)
I have no idea how Challenge Belt will work but Robotic Soccar as boring as it may be is acceptable, I mean it has a round 1,2 and final (or round 1 -> final) sort of format, it could have quite a few competitors. A Sumo Basho could be a decent eliminator or we can pit two robots against each other as opposed to using Shunt? Pinball is also fine but how many will compete is and how "entertaining" it'll be is up for debate.Diotoir the son of nemesis (talk) 16:03, April 7, 2020 (UTC)
I just realised, you could have included the Extreme Warriors Season 1 format of having five way melees with one winner. Of course if you have 4 of these you'd need 20 robots a round 2 with the winners and a heat final. Diotoir the son of nemesis (talk) 07:10, April 8, 2020 (UTC)
That would still leave two robots unaccounted for. I did propose a 2nd World Championship equse-heat, but that worked on the proposition that we'd only be having 96 robots, not 102. CrashBash (talk) 07:20, April 8, 2020 (UTC)
That format was in the original proposal, but in brackets because it requires so many robots. That one would only have appeared if we did Series 7, but we aren't doing it and I'd prefer some Trial heats. Jimlaad43(talk) 07:39, April 8, 2020 (UTC)
That's fine, I was gonna suggest that we could have two 5 ways and a final. As for trials, maybe three robots for four robotic soccar matches which lead into a round 2 and a final with ONE winner.Diotoir the son of nemesis (talk) 08:06, April 8, 2020 (UTC)

Heat format

Once we have all heat numbers decided, I will randomise the robot order and randomise the heat order. The heat formats will be coming out in that order, so don't expect to see Series 1 as Heat A. Pay attention to the first paragraph I write on each page as it will explain the format of that heat. I will be running one heat at a time, except for the trials, which I will put up together so we get more than one thing to judge at a time. Jimlaad43(talk) 13:50, April 7, 2020 (UTC)
