Robot Wars Wiki

"I have recently started work on my HW Robot "Hard-Ox", obviously a play on words from the material it'll made out of."
— Jay on Hard-Ox[2]

Hard-Ox was a competitor robot which attempted to enter Series 8 of Robot Wars, but was not selected to compete.

Hard-Ox was built from 3mm HARDOX and was shaped to be designed as an Ox with the design inspired by robots such as Matilda for their creativity. The robot was armed with a pair of jaws and a 520mm spinning bar which weighed 15kg. The robot had two Bosch 750W Motors, although the body had to be trimmed down to accommodate for this.

Due to flamethrower weapons being prohibited, Hard-Ox opted to have CO2 emitting from its nose to resemble a charging bull and create visual appeal for the audience.

Hard-Ox went through two changes during its build after its builder was displeased with the original design which was much wider in appearance. The second design incorporated a rollover design.

Hard-Ox was a pun on the steel armour HARDOX comprising the main shell of the robot, whilst referencing the ox bovine.

Throughout January and February of 2016, Hard-Ox was in the process of being created with the armour, jaws, motors and wheels being completed in time. Build progress on the robot paused when a work colleague died in a work-related accident, halting the robot's completion for a long period of time. Despite this setback, the weaponry and drive was fully fitted but the robot was not completed in time for filming and it ultimately was not selected to compete.

In May 2016, Hard-Ox was put up for sale due to being unable to finish the build, as a result it never attempted Series 9 or 10.

"It comes with great sadness, but I have have decided its time to let "Hard-Ox" go.. The past couple of months have become increasingly harder for me to spend time on the build, & its gotten that bad I have decided to leave the company completely and take a different career path. Without being at the company, i will not be able to continue the build as I do not have the facilities or space at home."
