For the robot that featured in Robot Wars: Arenas of Destruction, see Heavy Metal (video games).
- "Compared to us, all the other robots are lift music. We're Heavy Metal."
- — John Denny
Heavy Metal was a robot that competed in Series 9 of Robot Wars. It was built by Team 13, who previously competed with 13 Black and Limpet. Heavy Metal was originally planned to enter Series 8, but was not accepted while the robot was still in the design phase.
Heavy Metal entered the third heat of Series 9 and progressed to the Head-to-Heads despite taking damage from M.R. Speed Squared and losing drive on one wheel. It won a knockout victory by pitting M.R. Speed Squared in its first Head-to-Head, but was defeated by both Thor and eventual finalist Concussion, with its exposed wheels being its downfall in both battles, as it lost both after losing one wheel. It ultimately placed third in the heat, and did not progress to the Heat Final.
Design[]
- "They have designed a ‘never-been-seen-before’ robot, that has the ability to change it’s weaponry in a matter of seconds between a spinner, flipper, thwack bot or a large drill."
- — The Robot Wars website
Heavy Metal in Series 9 with its vertical blade
Heavy Metal was an offensive wedge, with a two-wheeled drive. The robot was driven by a Bosch 750 Watt brushed electric motor, running at 28 Volts and powered by a Lithium polymer 28 Volt battery, giving the robot a high top speed of between 12 and 15mph[1]. The wedge proved to be very low to the ground, hitting the seams of the closed Pit on a drive, although it was later exploited by Thor. Heavy Metal was armoured in 3mm thick RAEX steel, with high-density polythene plastic panels as an extra layer of sacrificial armour.
- "It's not very thick, but we just take chances."
- — John G Denny describes the armour to Angela Scanlon
Heavy Metal on the turntable
Heavy Metal's weapon was an electrically-powered articulating 360 degree arm with interchangeable weapons, including two blades for pinning robots in place, a rectangular blade for keeping other robots away while also making Heavy Metal a thwackbot, a grabbing hook, a drill and a saw[2]. The arm could also turn Heavy Metal over, but the team and show noted it was a low-offence weapon, rotating at 10rpm.
Heavy Metal's chassis and some internals
The design of Heavy Metal was inspired by Zoni, a very successful fleaweight Team 13 had built, which was also an invertible wedge-shaped robot[3].
- "I thought "I'll base it round a solid body", and that's the wedge - works upside down. ... But it had to have a weapon obviously as well, and the weapon I've got on it, that was just the arm, there was gonna be a weapon on the end, but obviously working on me own, and only having seven weeks to build it, it was a bit of a struggle to get it finished just to say the least! But I had some claws on it and stuff."
- — John Denny, interviewed in RoboNerd 2020[4]
Cath Denny notes the missing stoppers and damage that needed to be hammered out before reapplying more stoppers
Heavy Metal's chassis and wheels was built from hardened steel, the kind used in coal trucks[5], and unlike other robots of a comparable size such as The General and Chimera, the robot did not have rubber tyres around the wheels. For traction, the team covered the wheels with rubber stoppers. With few in reserve, they were very kindly collected up by the arena crew after each fight and given back to the team, while the wheels themselves were irreplaceable. Though twice broken, they were easily repaired as the axle, rather than the wheels, had broken.
- "You can throw it all around the arena, it'll come straight back at you. It's unstoppable!"
- — John Denny on Heavy Metal's invertible nature
Etymology[]
The name Heavy Metal was chosen by John Denny[6], and references the genre of music, with the robot's pink and purple colour-scheme being an homage to the cover art of one of the first heavy metal albums, Paranoid by Black Sabbath[7]. To reflect the name Heavy Metal, Team 13 carried inflatable instruments on the show, and the younger John Denny wore a metal mask.
The Team[]
- Main article: Team 13
Heavy Metal with Team 13
Heavy Metal was entered into Series 9 by Team 13, a family-based team from Leicestershire. Team 13 was captained by John G Denny, a crash tester by profession, who designed and built the robot. His son, John M Denny, drove Heavy Metal in battle, and is highly praised for his driving skills in lower weight classes. John M Denny's wife and daughter, Cath and Tasha, also completed the team. The Robot Wars website listed Cath and Tasha's roles as "Helper", though Cath did help with the robot's wheels[8], and Tasha was responsible for the team's outfits.
Team 13 had previously competed on Robot Wars with their namesake 13 Black, alongside Second Wars competitor Limpet.
- "This family-of-four team have put on hold major renovations on their house in order to fund the building of Heavy Metal for this series. ... this is his first time competing with his family, which makes it extra special."
- — The Robot Wars website on the Heavy Metal team[9]
Qualification[]
CAD image of Heavy Metal, with the square bar being rotated
Heavy Metal was built over a period of 9 months. John Denny was contacted by the BBC about returning to Robot Wars before the rebooted series had been officially announced and asked if he wanted to compete, and though John Denny wanted to compete and started coming up with the concept for the robot, the plans were delayed due to the family moving house, which prevented the team from entering Series 8.
- "They phoned me up and says "You've got to keep this dead secret - we're bringing back Robot Wars, do you want to build a robot for it?" I says "Yeah, go on then". I says "I can't build something too technical", because BattleBots was out, and I says "I can't match anything like that, 'cause I've not got the equipment". So I'll build something a bit Sumpthing-y, 'cause I was always keen on the machine. ... They phoned me up, I says "I'll build one, but I'll but it scrap, I'll do a Mad Max type robot."
- — John Denny on the initial plans for Heavy Metal, interviewed in RoboNerd 2020[10]
The team later applied for Series 9, for which it was selected thanks to its completed CAD and in-progress build. The robot was only finished the night before the team travelled to the filming of the series.
- "In fact while I had tested a few components I had no idea the whole robot would actually work because I hadn’t had chance to turn it on."
- — John M Denny, interviewed in the Hinckley Times[11]
However, despite applying for Series 10, Heavy Metal was not accepted for a re-appearance[12].
- "Heavy Metal will not be in the next series of Robotwars. It's mixed blessings really, yes we would have loved to be doing it all again but there is so much work involved and so little time available (about four weeks left) not to mention the cost (we don't have any sponsorship deals), it will be better to take more time and get it working much better and apply for series 11. I think the design has real potential and needs to be got right. I can also finally spend some time on the smaller robots again."
- — Team 13 Robots Facebook page on Heavy Metal's failure to qualify
Robot History[]
Series 9[]
- "My day-to-day job is a crash tester, I crash cars. From that job, I think I'll bring a natural like for destruction! ... The most impressive technical aspect is probably the rotating arm. My ultimate goal in the competition is obviously to win it."
- — John Denny in team's introduction
Heavy Metal competed in Heat C of Series 9, facing veterans M.R. Speed Squared and Foxic, and newcomer Expulsion.
- Angela Scanlon: "Usually alarm bells when there's exposed tyres, but there's no rubber as such on these tyres."
- John Denny: "No, these {the rubber stoppers} should provide plenty of grip, they're replaceable as well."
- Angela Scanlon: "Do you have spares of these? {The wheels}"
- John Denny: "No! (They both laugh)"
- — Concerns about the exposed wheels before the battle
Expulsion is turned on its side, having been pushed to Sir Killalot by Heavy Metal
As the battle commenced, Heavy Metal turned and drove towards Foxic, which reversed into the Arena Tyre, which opened the pit. Heavy Metal drove around Foxic and tried to get its side, but it drove away across the arena, charging at Expulsion. Heavy Metal held back as M.R. Speed Squared hit Expulsion with its spinning ring, and Foxic rammed into M.R. Speed Squared, pushing it aside. Heavy Metal the drove behind Expulsion and started pushing, trying to get underneath, but its front wedge was not able to breach the ground clearance, so Heavy Metal turned and got at Expulsion's side. It still couldn't get underneath, but was able to push Expulsion to the edge of Sir Killalot's CPZ. Heavy Metal turned away as Sir Killalot pushed Expulsion onto the arena spikes, which turned Expulsion up on its side.
- "We can see Expulsion getting a nudge from Heavy Metal there ... and Expulsion in on the spikes!"
- — Jonathan Pearce as Heavy Metal pushes Expulsion to the arena spikes
M.R. Speed Squared attacks Heavy Metal's wheels and bends its arm
Heavy Metal seemed to lose drive on one wheel, as it was only able to turn back and forth as Foxic charged in, ramming into Expulsion. Heavy Metal turned, backing into Foxic and riding up the side, but Foxic reversed, pushing past it. M.R. Speed Squared slammed into Foxic with its spinning ring, and Foxic reversed away, and drove over the Floor Flipper, which threw Foxic over, and it could not self-right as the flipper was not working due to a missing m10 restraining bolt[13].
Heavy Metal loses drive on one wheel, but goes through as Foxic is turned over by the Floor Flipper
With Expulsion having broken down and Foxic unable to self-right, the 10 second timer started. M.R. Speed Squared continued to rip into Expulsion, then turned on Heavy Metal, landing a glancing blow on one of the wheels, then as Heavy Metal turned, raising up its front end, M.R. Speed Squared managed to hit the 360 degree arm into the chassis. The impact knocked M.R. Speed Squared aside, and it skidded aside, landing on the arena spikes, which flipped it up. Time ran out, with M.R. Speed Squared the only fully mobile robot.
- "Are we through?"
- — John M Denny calls in question
Although Heavy Metal had lost drive on one wheel before Foxic was turned over, it still went through to the Head-to-Head stages. However, the robot had suffered significant damage, with M.R. Speed Squared's spinning disc having bent the 360 degree arm into the chassis.
- "Bit more damage than I thought; there's a lot of dents, the arm's all bent, and that's {the 360 degree arm} stuck in there - I think the axle's shifted! Could be serious, really serious!"
- — John Denny on the damage after Round 1
After noting the significant damage to their robot and making the repairs, Team 13 and Heavy Metal went back into the arena to fight M.R. Speed Squared in their first Head-to-Head, having had to cut the first arm off and replace it with another one.
- "If the disc of M.R. Speed Squared is functional, I think Heavy Metal could stand to lose their wheels here."
- — Jonathan Pearce before the battle
Heavy Metal slams M.R. Speed Squared into the CPZ arena wall
With vulnerable wheels and against a robot capable of removing them, Heavy Metal charged across the arena as soon as the battle and got under M.R. Speed Squared's ground clearance as the Forsey tried to get their weapon up to speed, spinning on the spot to try and do more damage. Heavy Metal's charge sent M.R. Speed Squared up on its side, and it flailed back to the arena wall, and as it fell back down, its weapon failed to begin spinning again. Heavy Metal quickly drove M.R. Speed Squared and pushed it over the pit, but the edge of its wedge caught the lip of the Pit, allowing M.R. Speed Squared to slip away off the flipper. Heavy Metal reversed off the Pit, then drove back at M.R. Speed Squared, this time driving around the Pit, and got underneath M.R. Speed Squared again, pushing it across the arena and into an empty CPZ, slamming it against the wall.
- "They're in underneath, Heavy Metal, who can flip them {M.R. Speed Squared}, certainly bash them onto the arena wall there!"
- — Jonathan Pearce as Heavy Metal rams M.R. Speed Squared against the wall
Heavy Metal pushes M.R. Speed Squared onto the Floor Flipper
M.R. Speed Squared rode up on the wall, and Heavy Metal pinned it in the corner. Heavy Metal reversed a little, letting M.R. Speed Squared escape the CPZ. M.R. Speed Squared drove out of the CPZ, then stopped and turned, and Heavy Metal charged at it, getting underneath again. Heavy Metal rammed M.R. Speed Squared across the arena, but as it drove across the pit, the tip of its wedge caught on the lip of the Pit again, stopping Heavy Metal for a second and allowing M.R. Speed Squared to slip off. Heavy Metal got under M.R. Speed Squared before it could get away, ramming it into the corner, keeping it pinned, but soon had to reverse, and M.R. Speed Squared drove around it, then drove out of the CPZ. Heavy Metal sped after it, but M.R. Speed Squared turned, and Heavy Metal skidded onto the flame pit. It managed to turn off before the flames rose, then charged at M.R. Speed Squared again, getting underneath and ramming its opponent into the Arena Tyre. The Pit opened, and Heavy Metal reversed, but as it tried turning around, M.R. Speed Squared pushed against its side. Heavy Metal turned and tried to push M.R. Speed Squared. but M.R. Speed Squared pushed Heavy Metal back, then got at its side as Heavy Metal tried reversing. Heavy Metal turned around M.R. Speed Squared and got the edge of its front wedge underneath, and pushed M.R. Speed Squared over to the floor flipper, which tossed M.R. Speed Squared up into the air, turning it over. As it landed, Heavy Metal got the tip of its front wedge under M.R. Speed Squared before it could get away, and pushed it over to Shunt's CPZ.
- "Heavy Metal in underneath M.R. Speed Squared, that really has been the tactic of this battle!"
- — Jonathan Pearce as Heavy Metal rams M.R. Speed Squared into Shunt
Heavy Metal pits M.R. Speed Squared
The House Robot axed a hole in the top of the Forsey machine and rammed it into the corner. Heavy Metal drove behind Shunt, but quickly turned and drove out, and Shunt let M.R. Speed Squared go. M.R. Speed Squared sped across the arena, with Heavy Metal chasing after it, but as it neared the arena wall, M.R. Speed Squared turned, and Heavy Metal crashed into the arena wall. M.R. Speed Squared drove away from Heavy Metal, driving dangerously close to the Pit. Heavy Metal drove to the arena centre as M.R. Speed Squared waited by the Pit, then cautiously approached it, getting around M.R. Speed Squared, then drove underneath again and pushed it into the Pit. Although it fell in as well, it won the battle by KO as M.R. Speed Squared went in first.
- "Doesn't matter that they went in afterwards, they pushed M.R. Speed Squared first! Win for Heavy Metal! Good work all the way through by Heavy Metal there, pushing M.R. Speed Squared onto the floor flipper, into the CPZ ... they tried to evade, but down they went! Heavy Metal are jammy!"
- — Jonathan Pearce after Heavy Metal pitted M.R. Speed Squared
The whole family celebrated the victory by cheering, pumping their fists up and down and jumping up down in delight.
- "Well I'll be honest, even if I hadn't seen the fight, I heard the cheering!"
- — Dara Ó Briain to the Denny family
However, the team had to repair Heavy Metal's wheels before their next battle after receiving significant damage to the wheel rims and losing lots of the rubber stoppers.
- John Denny: "There's a lot of them, the tyres come off, the little tyre things we've got."
- Cathy Denny: "They've gotta go back on, but we want to straighten all those {the wheels} up as well."
- Tasha Denny: "We've got quite a lot of dents so to get that maximum movement on the ground we want to make sure all of them {the rubber stoppers} to do it, so... just get a hammer out!"
- — The team discuss repairs to the wheels
After reapplying the rubber stoppers, Heavy Metal went into the arena to fight the rising newcomer, Concussion. Before the battle, John Denny reminded his son in the control booth that the team were "not very experienced, so you should be able to run rings around them"
- "We were next to the Concussion team in the pits and got on well with them but in the arena there is no compromise and we both went full on at each other."
- — John Denny, interviewed in The Hinckley Times[14]
Concussion hits Heavy Metal with its drum
As the battle started, Heavy Metal turned away from Concussion, and drove towards the Arena Tyre, but Concussion drove towards it, so Heavy Metal turned away from it and drove to the opposite side of the arena. Concussion drove after it, and Heavy Metal turned to face Concussion as it charged. Heavy Metal's wedge was low enough to get under the front of Concussion, avoiding the spinning drum. Concussion turned at Heavy Metal's side for another attack, then turned back, clipping the side, causing sparks but no major damage.
- "Ooh, something came off Heavy Metal there! There are bolts flying, bits of metal! Heavy Metal here taking some punishment!"
- — Jonathan Pearce as Concussion hits Heavy Metal with its drum, causing minor damage
Heavy Metal's wheel is sent out of the arena
Both competitors reversed a little, and as Concussion drove back at Heavy Metal, Heavy Metal tried to get under the front edge of Concussion, but Concussion managed to hit Heavy Metal's front with the drum, flipping the robot over. Heavy Metal turned, but Concussion rammed into it, pushing it towards the arena wall, and as Heavy Metal tried to drive away, it drove into the arena wall. Before it could turn away, Concussion drove into the back and hit one of the wheels, shearing the axle and ripping the wheel clean off, sending it flying out of the arena.
- "Oh, you're an ugly one!"
- — John Denny Jr after Concussion ripped off Heavy Metal's wheels
Concussion pushed Heavy Metal to the edge of the CPZ, then drove away, and though Heavy Metal was able to use its one remaining wheel to turn out of the CPZ, it could not drive forwards so was deemed immobile, and it was counted out for its first loss of the Head-to-Head round.
- Angela Scanlon: "Heavy Metal's wheels with their exposed wheels has finally run out."
- John Denny: "It looks like it took a massive hit on the wheel. It's sheared the axle, that's all. It's the one we've welded previously, it's just gonna need welding again. It's a weak point on the robot."
- — Inspecting the damage after the battle
Heavy Metal welded its broken axle back on and went into the arena to fight Series 8 Grand Finalist Thor for the right to join Concussion in the Heat Final, as each robot was on three points. Before the battle, John Denny was unsure as to how Heavy Metal would cope with their opponent's axe, as the team had never fought an axe using Heavy Metal.
- Dara Ó Briain: "Another huge decider here at the end of this episode, because it is Heavy Metal versus Thor, but how's it going to go?"
- John Denny: "Could go either way really, we're hopeful."
- Dara Ó Briain: "Are you?"
- John Denny: "Very."
- Dara Ó Briain: "Your driving has been excellent, your weapon I think has been... not quite decisive."
- John Denny: "It took some serious knocks in the melee, it's not been working too well. It's working, but not as it should."
- — Pre-battle interview
Heavy Metal loses the battle of ground clearances
Both robots were fast off the mark, and as Thor charged at Heavy Metal, Heavy Metal turned a little, trying do drive around to Thor's side as it charged in, but Thor was faster, charging at Heavy Metal and getting under it with its wedge, causing Heavy Metal to fly over its top. Heavy Metal quickly fell back, and turned to face Thor as it drove in, but Thor got under its front again, with Heavy Metal riding up onto its axe. As Heavy Metal tried to get off, Thor turned around and pushed Heavy Metal towards the side of the arena. Heavy Metal tried to turn away, but Thor got underneath again and kept pushing, forcing Heavy Metal into an empty CPZ. As it pushed, the rubber stoppers on Heavy Metals flew off in every direction.
- "Look at the arena floor, it's absolutely littered with the little rubber feet that are on the wheels of Heavy Metal to give it traction, which means they can hardly move without skittering!"
- — Jonathan Pearce
Heavy Metal's rubber stoppers fall off as Thor rams it
Thor tried to axe Heavy Metal, but narrowly missed as Heavy Metal turned away. Thor got behind Heavy Metal as it drove out of the CPZ, but Heavy Metal turned to face Thor, so Thor drove to get behind Heavy Metal. Heavy Metal turned as Thor tried to get under it, but Thor turned and got its front scoop underneath. Heavy Metal tried turning to get off the scoop, but Thor turned with it, keeping it on top of the scoop, until it fired the axe, which pushed Heavy Metal free, with the axe head failing to hit Heavy Metal. Thor turned, but turned onto Heavy Metal's front wedge. Heavy Metal pushed Thor, but Thor slipped off as Heavy Metal pushed. Thor charged away to the arena centre and turned around and charged back at Heavy Metal, but Heavy Metal drove past as Thor charged in. Thor turned to face Heavy Metal, ramming into it, but failed to get underneath, instead hitting the side and knocking Heavy Metal aside. Thor tried to get behind Heavy Metal, but Heavy Metal turned, getting at Thor's side. Heavy Metal tried to push, but Thor reversed and turned away, speeding away across the arena. Heavy Metal tried to drive after it, but as it turned, one of its wheels slowed to a stop, leaving it barely able to drive forwards. As Heavy Metal limped forwards on one wheel, Thor rushed back at it, getting under the front with its scoop, and though Heavy Metal managed to turn, it couldn't drive away, and as it turned around, Thor got behind and hit it with its axe as it rammed it against the arena wall in the CPZ, then turned and slammed it to another arena wall.
- "The weaponry, electronically powered, can move at 10 RPM, but it's going nowhere! And Thor is in behind!"
- — Jonathan Pearce as Thor rams Heavy Metal
Matilda scuffs Heavy Metal's wedge
Heavy Metal loses its wheel again
Thor turned and rammed Heavy Metal out of the CPZ, but as it drove over the pit, the edge of Thor's scoop caught on the edge of the pit, stopping its charge, and Heavy Metal skidded away. Heavy Metal slid over the arena centre, but was barely able to turn, and Thor rushed over, getting under the side and pushing it onto the arena spikes, which raised, flipping Heavy Metal over. Thor kept pushing, forcing Heavy Metal into Matilda's flywheel as it was flipped over by the spikes. Matilda hit Heavy Metal's wedge with her flywheel, denting the armour and causing spikes, but Heavy Metal used its spinning arm to push itself away from the flywheel, flipping itself over and away from Matilda. However, Thor was right at its side, and hit it with its axe. Thor edged Heavy Metal back into Matilda's flywheel, and as Heavy Metal was hit on both sides by Matilda and Thor, its left wheel dislodged.
- "And off comes the wheel of Heavy Metal! And now stuck between Thor and Matilda, and I'm afraid this heavy metal gig, is about to end with a slow dance!"
- — Jonathan Pearce
Matilda lines up her attack on Heavy Metal's wheel
The left wheel had been the only one still working, so Heavy Metal was now totally immobile. Thor fired its axe again, but narrowly missed, with the axe glancing off the side, and Matilda got her tusks under the front and flipped Heavy Metal over. Thor rammed into Heavy Metal's immobile body and rammed it up the arena, slamming it against the Arena Tyre. The Pit opened, and Thor pushed Heavy Metal into an empty CPZ, but 'Cease' was called. With the battle over, Matilda hit Heavy Metal's dislodged wheel with her flywheel, sending it flying across the arena, throwing it into the corner.
- "Heavy Metal, game opponents, but a beaten opponent!"
- — Jonathan Pearce as the battle ends
As a result, Heavy Metal was eliminated, whist Thor went through to the Heat Final.
- "Again we were friends with the driver but there was no let up and we both got stuck in. Unfortunately our robot was suffering from the damage in the previous fights and the tyre studs were all over the place. We put up a good fight...but Thor hit us really hard, bending the axle on the other side of the weak, damaged one. We got wedged between house robot Matilda and Thor, breaking the repaired axle again.""

The chassis and wheels of Heavy Metal with Clank 5 at the 2016 Robots Live! Cannock event
Heavy Metal in Robots Live! Burgess Hill 2017
Heavy Metal's first appearance outside of Robot Wars came at the Robots Live! event in Cannock, held in October 2016. The robot's unfinished chassis and wheels were brought to the event in a partially assembled state, where the team also competed with their featherweight, Clank 5.
The day before the team's appearance in Series 9, the team were interviewed by BBC Radio Leicester[16].
The completed Heavy Metal attended Robots Live! in Burgess Hill in April 2017, sporting new coating for its wheels that would not come loose so easily. It fought Gabriel, Meggamouse and Puck, but lost.
- "It got dropped over the arena wall by the house robot and bent the axle, never managed to repair it. Not really retired but no time to do anything except antweights."
- — John Denny[17]
Heavy Metal is still in the possession of John Denny, but has not been repaired.
Trivia[]
- Heavy Metal was the only robot to successfully pit an opponent in Series 9.
- Apart from some parts were were fabricated by a work colleague of John Denny's at MIRA, all the design and construction of Heavy Metal was done by John Denny[18]. The robot was also entirely funded by John Denny[19].
- Heavy Metal's motors were reused from 13 Black.
- "...at least £1000 but the motors were from 13 Black so that saved quite a bit."
- — John Denny on the rough cost of Heavy Metal[20]
- Before the fight with Thor, Heavy Metal team captain John Denny said they had never fought an axe before, despite Heavy Metal's predecessor, 13 Black, beating Stinger in Series 6 and Dominator 2 in Extreme 2.
- Heavy Metal's appearance also marked the second time Team 13 fought in the same Heat as Thor.
