Iron Man was a walking robot which applied to compete in the Walker Battles of Series 3, but was not selected to compete due to being too large for any other competitor. It was built by son-and-father team, Mike and Mick Parry.
Design[]
- "Wedge shaped robots are not what some people think of when they envision a traditional robot"
- — Mike Parry on a more humanoid design for Iron Man
Iron Man was to be a humanoid shaped robot, as Mike Parry believed that the majority of competing robots were 'too simple and run of the mill'. With two pickaxes in place of hands, it had a wide base, with two large "feet" of over 1 metre length and 1.5 metres wide for walking. The Iron Man's upper torso was made from an old aluminium beer barrel.
Etymology[]
Iron Man's name was not derived from the Marvel comic book character, rather it is named after the Ted Hughes book The Iron Man, which in turn was adapted into the animated film The Iron Giant[1].
Qualification[]
Iron Man attended the auditions for walkers, but was rejected by the producers, due to its intimidating appearance.
- "It went in for series 3, It got on to the stage as a show but but did not qualify, as they thought it was too intimidating!! (I suppose that is a back handed compliment!)."
- — Mike Parry on Facebook, speaking of Iron Man
