The Middleweight Championship was a UK Robot Wars side competition for robots in the middleweight class, weighing up to 45.4kg[1] (Series 1-4) or 54kg (Series 5-7, Extreme). There were a total of four Middleweight Championships: one in Series 2, one in each series of Robot Wars Extreme, and one in Series 7.
Usually, the competition was made up of a single melee battle between all entrants. The sole exception was the Extreme 2 championship, which included a two-round structure also incorporating melee matches. Participants in the latter were split across two four-way Heats; two winning robots from each would progress to the final round.
A Middleweight Championship was also among the side competitions planned for Series 3, but cancelled due to a behind-the-scenes accident in The Pits.[2] In its place, the Middleweight Melee was held at a later point in filming and broadcast as the Special Event of Heat C, featuring separate trophies[3] and robots originally intended to compete in the Middleweight Championship. Nevertheless, a link for the Middleweight Championship featuring Craig Charles was recorded and broadcast prior to the Melee. Charles' announcement suggests that the proposed Middleweight Championship was to have consisted of more than one round and been aired across multiple episodes.
- "Robots are a big like boxers, and I don't mean they're hard, ugly and can be quite thick. What I mean is that not all of them are like the heavyweights in the main competition. Which is why, over the series, we'll also be running a middleweight competition, and its seconds out for Round 1!"

There was an additional bout held late in the day of the accident between lightweight Zippy and middleweight Virus, where Zippy was declared the victor by the audience.
