For the unrelated heavyweight robot from Series 2, see Phoenix (Heavyweight).

Phoenix was a middleweight robot which competed in the Middleweight Championship of Series 7 of Robot Wars. It was eliminated early on in the battle after sustaining damage from defending Middleweight champion, Typhoon.

The McBride family also entered the Middleweight Championship of Robot Wars Extreme: Series 2 with Malc 1.5.

Side view of Phoenix

Phoenix was a box wedge-shaped robot, driven by two wheels positioned on the side of the robot. Phoenix used checker plate metal armour, and its weapon was a red lifting arm. At 42kg, Phoenix was under the weight limit for Middleweight machines by 12kg. Phoenix's weapon was potentially useful, although the robot had a high ground clearance with its weapon not perfectly aligned with the floor, and its exposed wheels provided a weakness.

Robot History[]

Series 7[]

Phoenix competed in the Middleweight Championship, broadcast as the Special Event of Heat K. There, it faced the reigning Middleweight champion Typhoon and the Team Terror Turtle representative, Steel Sandwich. Two robots the McBride family had fought before.

Phoenix is counted out, with Growler looming

At the start, Phoenix hesitated to get involved in the action, until it charged straight into a CPZ while attempting to ram Typhoon. It left the CPZ once Growler approached, and briefly pursued Typhoon as the latter's weapon stopped spinning. Phoenix spun uncontrollably as it and Steel Sandwich chased Typhoon across the arena; the three competitors continued driving around, towards and away from each other for some time as Refbot pressed the pit release button. In the process, Phoenix spun close to a flame jet, before Typhoon hit its side and sent it spinning into Growler. The attack immobilised Phoenix almost instantly, leaving it unable to escape as Growler opened its jaws in preparation for an attack.

Rise Like a Phoenix

Phoenix is flung through the air

Refbot counted Phoenix out, before Growler pushed it into the Floor Flipper. It was thrown across the arena and into a CPZ, narrowly staying inside the arena. Ultimately, Phoenix lost the Middleweight Championship battle to Typhoon.

Orpheus

Team member Connor McBride would later start to build featherweight robots of his own, under the name Team Driving Force. The first of these was Johnny 2x4, a pushing robot made of 2x4 wood which competed in the 2012 UK featherweight championship[1] albeit without success. The team would later compete in the 2018 Featherweight Championship hosted by King of Bots, entering with Orpheus. Equipped with a grabbing claw, Orpheus was much more successful and reached the Top 12 of the competition before being eliminated by Amnesia. For more information, see the King of Bots Wiki[2].

Trivia[]

  • In its only battle, Phoenix fought both robots which defeated its predecessor in the Middleweight Championship during the second series of Extreme.
