Piranha was a competitor robot that appeared in the second series of Robot Wars Extreme. It fought exclusively in the New Blood Championship, reaching the second round where it lost to Pressure on a close judges' decision.
Piranha was a round robot similar in design to Thor from the original American Robot Wars designed by Marc Thorpe. It fought exclusively in the New Blood Championship of Extreme 2. It was solid constructed with aluminium and armed with a 1m swinging arm with 1" blades, again similar to Thor. It also had solid rubber wheels for perfect traction and 20mph top speeds but had an unreliable srimech. Piranha got through to the second round, losing to Pressure. The team, unofficially called 'Professor Piranha' and 'Miss Ile', had been given some help building the robot from Team Razer. It attempted to qualify for Series 7 but lost to a robot called Tanto who also failed to qualify for the Seventh Wars.

Piranha was a silver, rounded box-shaped robot armoured in aluminium with four plated spikes along its top panel, and featuring a 1 metre swinging arm as its weapon. The arm featured 1-inch serrated blades along its bottom and functioned in a similar way to an axe/hammer, with the team referring to this weapon as a 'saw-hammer'. The robot also featured solid rubber wheels for optimised traction and had a high top speed of 25mph, although its 'saw-hammer' was unproven as a self-righting mechanism and did not prove effective during either of its battles.

Piranha faced Fatal Traction and Doctor Fist in its first round battle. Piranha began by attacking Fatal Traction with its blade several times, then pushing it around the arena. While Doctor Fist was having steering problems, Piranha continued to shove Fatal Traction around the arena and attack it. Fatal Traction finally began to attack Piranha with its flywheel, doing little damage. Then it opened the pit. All the while, Doctor Fist was spinning around in circles. The two robots continued to attack each other. Meanwhile, Refbot had counted out Doctor Fist, and both other robots went through. In the second round, Piranha was drawn against Pressure. Pressure took advantage of Piranha's inaccurate axe blows to lift and slam it into Matilda's corner patrol zone, where the house robot's flywheel flayed part of Piranha's shell. Piranha fought back, pushing Pressure towards Shunt's CPZ, where some blows rained down on Pressure. A pushing match ensued between the pair, with neither machine's weapons doing significant damage. The judges ruled in favour of Pressure due to the damage Piranha sustained from Matilda.

Piranha was a competitor robot that appeared in the second series of Robot Wars Extreme. It fought exclusively in the New Blood Championship, reaching the second round where it lost to Pressure on a close judges' decision.

Design

Piranha was a silver, rounded box-shaped robot armoured in aluminium with four plated spikes along its top panel, and featuring a 1 metre swinging arm as its weapon. The arm featured 1-inch serrated blades along its bottom and functioned in a similar way to an axe/hammer, with the team referring to this weapon as a 'saw-hammer'. The robot also featured solid rubber wheels for optimised traction and had a high top speed of 25mph, although its 'saw-hammer' was unproven as a self-righting mechanism and did not prove effective during either of its battles.

The Team

Piranha was entered into Robot Wars by a Dorset-based team, consisting of team captain Rhys Bennett, who drove Piranha in battle, and Melanie Bennett. The two team members referred to themselves as 'Professor Piranha' and 'Miss Ile' on-screen, respectively, creating a pun on missile.

The team received some advice from Team Razer while building the robot as well as the use of their workshop to cut the metal for the robot's unique weapon. This connection was heavily emphasised during the team's interviews with Philippa Forrester, with Simon Scott and Ian Lewis even being present with the team before their battle with Pressure.

Philippa Forrester: "Is this [Rhys Bennett] the roboteer of the future?"
Simon Scott: "It is. This lad is a potential trophy winner. Maybe not now, this maybe his big learning curve, with all that's all about. But if he keeps it up, then, um, he could supersede us."
— Optimism from Team Razer about Rhys Bennett's potential success as a roboteer

Qualification

After first being selected to compete in the New Blood Championship after entering open applications, Piranha attempted to enter its first main series in the Seventh Wars, where it fought Tanto in its qualifier battle. Although Tanto reportedly won the battle, neither robot would end up competing in Series 7.

Fatal Traction pushed Piranha into Matilda, with both robots narrowly avoiding being hit by her flywheel. They continued to push each other around the arena and exchange blows with their weapons as Doctor Fist was pushed onto the Flame Pit by Refbot and attacked by Mr. Psycho and Matilda, eventually being counted out by Refbot and carried to the Flame Pit again by Mr. Psycho.
