Positron was a heavyweight robot designed with the intention of competing in a proposed eighth series of Robot Wars on Five, during its classic run.

With the show being cancelled after The Seventh Wars however, Positron never did appear on Robot Wars.

Design[]

Positron was a long, two-wheel drive robot with sloped sides and a front-mounted plough, similar to that of Shunt. Both sides featured a flipping panel which doubled up as armour, and a 12kg horizontal disc sat at the rear measuring 315mm in diameter.

The robot was largely armoured in aluminium, as it was initially discovered to be “significantly overweight” according to the team. 10mm aluminium was also used for the robot's baseplate and flippers.[1]

According to the team’s website, Positron would be painted to look like a bee, with its side flippers doubling up as “wings” and the rear disc acting as a stinging tail. There are no images of the robot in this guise, however, so it is unknown whether the team dropped this idea in the build stage.[2]

Etymology[]

A positron is a subatomic particle with the same mass and spin as an electron. But unlike an electron, a positron has a positive charge. This has no relevance to the aforementioned bee design, however.

Trivia[]

  • Following the cancellation of Robot Wars after Series 7, Positron was built for the 2004 Robot Crusade Enginuity event, but did not apply in time, and was relegated to being a reserve.
    • Positron was inevitably unfinished by the time of the event, so was a display robot instead.
