- "Tonight, there will be chaos! Tonight, there will be carnage! Tonight, there will be no turning back! Because right now, Robot Wars... goes EXTREME! And who do we want to see in action? [Crowd begins chanting] Well... we shall see, my friends. We shall see! But the big question is... will we see the end of Hypno-Disc, officially Robot Wars' most destructive robot?"
- — Craig Charles' introduction
Episode 2 of Robot Wars Extreme: Series 1 was originally broadcast on 9 October 2001 on BBC Choice and repeated on 2 November 2001 on BBC Two.
Like most episodes of Extreme 1, it featured battles from multiple competitions which ran across the entire series, as well as a main event. Here, the main event was a Mayhem, featuring Hypno-Disc, Wheely Big Cheese and Ming 3. The series' Middleweight Championship was also aired, taking place as a solitary melee between six robots.
The BBC Two broadcast managed to attract 3.24 million viewers, an increase of 370,000 viewers when compared with the previous episode. According to BARB, this meant it ranked ninth in the top thirty highest rated BBC 2 broadcasts during 29 October-4 November, between episodes of The Simpsons.

Main Event[]
- "That's right, Craig, tonight's main event will be the ultimate Mayhem mash-up! Can the deadly Hypno-Disc survive the onslaught of two awesome robots: Wheely Big Cheese and Ming 3? But whilst our competitors prepare, we've got the first of our Tag Team Terror battles. Will the reigning Tag Team Terror champions King B3 and 101 keep their crown of carnage against Diotoir and Mega Morg? There's a monstrous melee featuring six of the meanest middleweights on the planet. Stinger faces a newcomer keen to join the Robot Wars clan in our Wild Card Warrior battle and we've a Vengeance that promises to get ugly between the titanic X-Terminator and the awesome champion of The Second Wars Panic Attack. All that before our monstrous main event featuring Hypno-Disc in a three-way melee between Wheely Big Cheese and Ming 3"
- — Jonathan Pearce announces the line-up
The main event of Episode 2 was a Mayhem battle between Hypno-Disc, Wheely Big Cheese and Ming 3. The main hype of the episode surrounded the fact that Hypno-Disc could potentially struggle with its opponents.
- "Lets remind ourselves what Hypno-Disc can do - it can literally shred armour, weaponry, speed controllers, motors and batteries. Awesome, awful, demonic, destructive! It's not hype, it's Hypno...Disc!"
- — Jonathan Pearce, recapping Hypno-Disc's past performances
Battles & Build-Up[]
Tag Team Terror: King B Powerworks & 101 vs Diotoir & Mega Morg[]
- Main article: Robot Wars Extreme: Series 1/Tag Team Terror#101 & King B Powerworks vs Mega Morg & Diotoir
The first battle of the episode was the first round of the Tag Team Terror tournament, where reigning champions King B Powerworks and 101 faced the first challengers of their title defense against Irish-Welsh pairing Diotoir and Mega Morg, who claimed they had teamed up after The Four Horsemen had transported a shipment of "Ninja Sheep" to Ireland. A short recap of King B3 and 101's victory in the previous Tag Team Terror was shown and both teams expressed confidence of success.
- "They're only champions because we weren't in it last year"
- — Dr Zulu trash-talks King B Powerworks and 101
101 stabs the front of Mega Morg
101 started out against Mega Morg. The defending champion was faster of the tracks, but neither machine made a meaningful attack, as they drove around the arena. Eventually, they made a frontal attack on each other. 101's spike fired at Mega Morg, but the two seemed largely matched in power. Moments later, both robots tagged their partners, and King B Powerworks and Diotoir entered the arena. Diotoir rammed into the side of King B Powerworks, but made no attempt to flip it, and King B quickly drove away. It then rammed Diotoir hard side-on, knocking off the inflatable sheep mascot from Mega Morg.
King B Powerworks is trapped by Diotoir
King B then got underneath Diotoir's raised scoop and pushed it towards the arena wall. It was close enough to the CPZ to allow Mega Morg to attack, but it avoided being flipped.
- "Be prepared for mayhem here, absolute confusion. I'm sure that it'll all just break down into an utter rumble"
- — Jonathan Pearce foreshadows the inevitable
Sergeant Bash threatens Diotoir, while inflatable sheep line the arena floor
Diotoir and King B attacked each other again, this time with King B using its rear saw, causing a few scratches on Diotoir's scoop. Diotoir missed a flip, and King B then attacked the inflatable sheep with its saw. Diotoir then pushed it back towards Mega Morg's CPZ, but Sergeant Bash suddenly came out of his CPZ and attacked Diotoir with his flamethrower, slowly igniting the fur. Mega Morg tried to defend its partner, but the two Celtic robots seemed to be having difficulty actually tagging each other.
- "Why is Diotoir taking the punishment here, and why is Mega Morg not coming out?"
- — Jonathan Pearce
All four robots fight at the same time
Eventually, Mega Morg was able to come out of its CPZ and rammed into 101. Barely seconds later, all four robots joined in the battle, with King B pushing Mega Morg into the arena wall and 101 doing the same with the now burning Diotoir. The two changed their targets and 101 managed to push Mega Morg, but Diotoir managed to pin King B against the top arena wall. King B was able to get away, but then started spinning around on the spot. 101 pursued Mega Morg towards the far arena wall, which allowed Diotoir to get underneath it and flip it over. As soon as 101 landed on its back, however, it became apparent that only one of its tracks was working.
A smouldering Diotoir flips 101 over
- "101 now under pressure from Diotoir. Diotoir will flip 101 - don't worry about that, it can work both ways up because of the tank tracks - but is only one of the tank tracks working?! I think it is! And all of a sudden, the reigning champions are in trouble cos I think King B is spinning wildly out of control, and the reigning champions could be facing elimination here in the Tag Team Terror! There's no control on King B, and 101 in trouble too. This could be a shock!"
- — Jonathan Pearce
King B Powerworks, meanwhile, had driven into the CPZ and was still spinning wildly on the spot, apparently having lost all control. Diotoir pushed it around, and amidst the spinning, King B's forklifts tore off one of Diotoir's eyes. Time ran out and the judges made the decision.
- "I'd just like to say that makes us the world champions now. We'll stop the tournament, we've beaten you lot, we are the world champions!"
- — Dorian Caudy
Diotoir and Mega Morg were deemed the winners on the resulting decision and Mega Morg captain Dorian Caudy boasted that they could be considered the Tag Team world champions. However, both Team B and Team 101 were quick to blame each other for their loss, with Mike Franklin notably insisting that they could have won if King B Powerworks hadn't broken down. This discussion continued into the pits after the battle, with Julia Reed suggesting that a Venegance battle might occur between the two teams.
- Julia Reed: "Do you think there's going to be a grudge match?"
- Mike Franklin: "I wouldn't be surprised."
- — The post-battle pit talk.
Winners: Diotoir & Mega Morg
Build-Up 1[]
Following from the Tag Team Terror, Craig Charles provided the first build-up to Hypno-Disc's Mayhem fight. Here, he introduced Hypno-Disc's first opponent, Wheely Big Cheese, with the team displaying confidence that they could flip Hypno-Disc over.
- "Tonight it's not going to be Hypno-Disc, it's going to be Flip-No-Disc!"
- — Roger Plant
Middleweight Championship: Typhoon vs Zap vs Hard Cheese vs Mammoth vs Genesis vs Doom[]
The second fight was the Middleweight Championship, which featured six robots weighing no more than 54 kg fighting in a melee to determine who would be crowned the Middleweight champion.
Typhoon obliterates Mammoth and Doom
The battle begun with Genesis, Doom and Zap pushing against each other, with Typhoon slowly moving towards them, its spinning shell quickly up to speed. It hit Zap and Genesis very quickly, knocking them away.
- "And Typhoon looks the most effective of all of these immediately"
- — Jonathan Pearce
Mammoth's legs are shredded
After just a few more hits, Zap was flung into the arena wall and rendered immobilised. Typhoon also managed to annihilate the bottom of Mammoth, therefore it couldn't move properly anymore. Doom quickly came in and began to push the wounded Mammoth, whilst Typhoon then dealt blows to Hard Cheese and Genesis, effectively immobilising both machines, with Genesis being knocked onto the floor flipper.
- "This is only a middleweight contest, but I think if you threw Typhoon in with some heavyweights, they'd have a real chance. Mammoth's chances...well, I'm not too sure. To be honest, I think my lawnmower could do better!"
- — Jonathan Pearce on Typhoon and Mammoth.
Hard Cheese and Doom, on the arena floor flipper
Doom is destroyed by Matilda's flywheel
Hard Cheese was still spinning around in circles, but couldn't move freely across the arena floor. Doom was immobilised next, around the time that Genesis was counted out by the Refbot and thrown by the arena floor flipper. The two next to go on the floor flipper were Mammoth and Zap. The final two to be put on the floor flipper were Hard Cheese and Doom, as Hard Cheese finally ground to a firm halt. After being flipped by the floor flipper, Doom landed on Matilda's flywheel, causing horrific damage. Typhoon won as the last robot left mobile.
- "What a Mammoth fight! Hard Cheese to Doom, Genesis and Zap!"
- — Craig Charles, using all the beaten robot names
Typhoon had single-handedly defeated all of its opponents, becoming the Robot Wars Extreme Series 1 Middleweight Champion, and even ripped a fibreglass tusk away from Matilda[1], not shown on television.
Winner: Typhoon
Wild Card Warriors: Ajjay vs Stinger[]
The next fight was a Wild Card Warriors battle, which pitted newcomer Ajjay against the reigning third place finisher Stinger. Julia Reed interviewed both teams prior to the battle, and Stinger captain Kevin Scott explained that, to approach the pedigree they had, Ajjay would need courage to take on Stinger. By contrast, Ajjay's team insisted they would have no trouble dealing with the experienced machine.
Sir Killalot picks up Ajjay
The fight began with both robots largely dodging each other. Ajjay made the first attack, ramming into Stinger whilst avoiding its bludgeoning spike, but its spinning weapon didn't appear to be working. Stinger missed several hits with its spike, and Ajjay continued to ram it, eventually hitting it into the pit release button. Stinger drove away, and Ajjay attempted to ram it again, but made no meaningful attacks, whilst Stinger merely continued to slam its mace on the arena floor.
- "But is there control? Is there any aim to this?"
- — Jonathan Pearce noting both robots lacking in good control
The constant dodging continued, with Ajjay seemingly unable to control itself properly. This became evident when, under no pressure, it drove straight into Sir Killalot's CPZ, who picked it up in his claws.
Stinger attacks Ajjay
- "Ajjay! Ajjay! Ajjay!? OK? KO? I think so..."
- — Jonathan Pearce
Killalot eventually dropped Ajjay, who then drove onto the flame pit. Ajjay then drove at Stinger, who at last started landing meaningful attacks with its spike. The two robots then continued to drive at each other.
- "The underdogs have come here, though, with plenty of pluck, determination and courage, and we'll give them credit for that"
- — Jonathan Pearce praises Ajjay
A few more less meaningful attacks occurred to both robots, and suddenly Stinger reversed towards Sir Killalot, who grabbed hold of it by its axle. He then proceeded to carry it towards the arena wall; cease was called, but Killalot dropped Stinger out anyway. The judges were called to make a decision.
- "They've done all the work, but it looks as if it could get tossed out of the arena here! But Killalot's got to beat the clock! The clock is ticking down, can Stinger survive? Can Stinger stay in? I think they've just stayed in! Out of the arena they go. But I think it was after time, in which case, Killalot was bang out of order!"
- — Jonathan Pearce as Killalot throws Stinger out of the arena.
A split decision ruled in favour of Stinger, to mixed responses from the crowd. Although Craig Charles was critical about Ajjay's weapons, both he and the Stinger team praised the newcomer for its performance.
- "We nearly got some egg on our faces, but we came through in the end, I really enjoyed that fight and Ajjay did so well for a beginner."
- — Karl Skinner after the battle.
Build-Up 2[]
After the Wild Card Warrior, Craig Charles went on to discuss the Main Event. After recapping Hypno-Disc and Wheely Big Cheese, he introduced Ming 3, the third competitor in the battle. As with Team Big Cheese, Team Ming displayed confidence in the pits.
- "At the end of the day, we're from Planet Mongo and they're just pathetic Earthlings!"
- — Andrew Cotterall
Vengeance: Panic Attack vs X-Terminator[]
Panic Attack turns X-Terminator over
- "Can you believe it? Someone's got a grudge against Panic Attack, the former British champions."
- — Craig Charles sets the scene for the grudge match
The next fight was a Vengeance battle between Panic Attack and X-Terminator, with Craig Charles showing surprise that anyone could hold a grudge against the former champion. In an interview with Julia Reed in the Pits, the X-Terminator team revealed were unhappy with their losses against Panic Attack, not only after it beat it in Series 3 after X-Terminator's CO2 canister was ruptured, but also after Panic Attack narrowly beat it in the Sumo Basho of Series 4. The team also blamed Panic Attack's attack on Sir Killalot in Series 4 for their poor performance later in the same semi-final. When questioned by Reed, Team Panic Attack insisted that the X-Terminator team were just being sore losers.
X-Terminator entered the arena with a large fixed spike at the front, but this proved to be its undoing, as Panic Attack flipped it over straight away. The spike prevented X-Terminator from righting itself. Panic Attack opened the pit, then attempted to push X-Terminator towards it, but in doing so actually helped to right it. The two robots then chased each other around the arena, with Panic Attack pushing underneath X-Terminator a few times, its foe missing an axe blow. Eventually, Panic Attack drove near the pit, luring X-Terminator towards it, before lifting it up and carefully dropping it in the pit.
Panic Attack pits X-Terminator
In the subsequent interview with Charles, the X-Terminator team admitted that their performance was "pitiful", but refused to accept that Panic Attack was superior, instead claiming that X-Terminator wasn't working as well as it should.
- Craig Charles: "These guys really think they can take you, y'know? That's the third time you've whooped them but they still believe they can take you."
- Kim Davies: "They can dream on."
- — After the battle
Mayhem: Hypno-Disc vs Wheely Big Cheese vs Ming 3[]
Pre-Fight[]
- "He's never been truly disgraced in the warzone before, but is this the end of Hypno-Disc? Wheely Big Cheese and Ming are out to make sure it is"
- — Craig Charles
Following on from the Venegance battle, Charles announced what he described as the "Ultimate Mayhem" between Hypno-Disc, Wheely Big Cheese and Ming 3, once again placing emphasis on Hypno-Disc potentially losing. Reed assisted with taking Hypno-Disc into the arena and asked the team how they felt about the upcoming battle. Dave Rose admitted he was worried about Wheely Big Cheese in particular, as he felt that, if Hypno-Disc landed from a large height, its srimech would be damaged. The rest of the team added that Hypno-Disc's flywheel had been improved with new electronics the night before.
Reed subsequently interviewed the other teams. Roger Plant remained confident about beating Hypno-Disc, stating that he had a strategy planned especially for the battle, although he refused to elaborate on it. By contrast, Team Ming were extremely nervous about the fight, with Andrew Cotterell stating he would rather have had more testing with their new machine. Alexander and Oliver subsequently admitted they'd rather face Wheely Big Cheese, as its weapon could not cause damage and Ming 3 could self-right if it was flipped over.
Following this, Charles still felt like Hypno-Disc could potentially be at risk and asked Jonathan Pearce for his opinions on the matter. Pearce, whilst largely praising Hypno-Disc, remained wary about Wheely Big Cheese based on Hypno-Disc's previous susceptibility to flippers.
- "This could be a close shave for Hypno-Disc"
- — Jonathan Pearce
The Battle[]
- "So, for a wheely big Mayhem, you need a wheely big robot. It's Wheely Big Cheese! ... and hoping to cheese him off, go mental for Ming! ... and completing today's Mayhem line-up, a robot so good, they made the toy. It's the mighty, the awesome, Hypno-Disc!"
- — Craig Charles introduces the robots as they enter the arena.
The battle of deadly weapons
The three robots had a very tentative start to the battle, with none of them making any real attempt to attack. Hypno-Disc briefly drove over Wheely Big Cheese's flipper, but the weapon did not activate. Ming 3 attempted to join in the battle, but Hypno-Disc's weapon shredded one of Ming 3's wheels, before Wheely Big Cheese thrust the crusher-robot away. Ming 3 limped away, whilst Hypno-Disc attacked Wheely Big Cheese. The first attacks were evidently making an impact, with large gashes being made in the flipper and one of the wheels. Wheely Big Cheese and Ming attempted a pincer attack on Hypno-Disc, but their mobility was now limited, and Hypno-Disc escaped, evading a flip from Wheely Big Cheese and attacking its other wheel. By now, both Wheely Big Cheese and Ming were limping badly, with large slices in the former's wheels. One last side attack from Hypno-Disc buckled Wheely Big Cheese's left wheel.
Ming 3 is left without any wheels
- "Wheely Big Cheese has been grated, lets be honest. And as for Hypno-Disc, it is putting everyone under its spell"
- — Jonathan Pearce
Hypno-Disc then went to attack Ming 3, who was unable to move properly. Hitting the same wheel it had sliced earlier, Hypno-Disc tore it clean off. It then ripped off Ming's other wheel too, immobilising it completely.
- "Back to Mongo for Andrew Cotterell!"
- — Jonathan Pearce, referencing the Ming team's claim to be 'from the planet Mongo', as Refbot prepares to count it and Wheely Big Cheese out
Refbot counted both Ming 3 and Wheely Big Cheese out and Ming 3 was flung by the floor flipper. Wheely Big Cheese, still able to move on one side, attempted to flip Ming 3, but Dead Metal grabbed it and then sliced into one of its wheels, causing fantastic sparks.
Dead Metal cuts into Wheely Big Cheese
- "This is why this is the battle of the night!"
- — Jonathan Pearce as the sparks fly
After sawing into Wheely Big Cheese's wheel a few more times, the house robots pitted it and Ming 3.
With Hypno-Disc the clear winner, Charles interviewed all three teams, starting with Team Ming. Andrew Cotterell admitted that Hypno-Disc's first attack had taken out the drive in the wheel, preventing it from moving properly. By contrast, Roger Plant lightheartedly stated that the damage to Wheely Big Cheese was minimal and could easily be repaired. Charles then spoke to the Rose family, who admitted that they thought the fight would be a challenge due to the heavy armour of both robots, so had focused on the exposed wheels. Charles also questioned the team on the whirring noise the disc made as it rotated, which they revealed to be the gearing - Charles admitted he found it "scary".
Winner: Hypno-Disc
- "If you ever wonder if robots dream, they dream about fighting and going Extreme!"
- — Craig Charles' sign-off
Trivia[]
- This episode saw two different reigning champions lose their titles; the Tag Team partnership of King B Powerworks and 101, and the Middleweight champion Hard Cheese. This would be Hard Cheese's final appearance in Robot Wars.
- Mammoth, although it weighed as much as most of the other competitors in the melee, was in fact a Lightweight class robot, due to it being a walkerbot. The only reason that Mammoth participated in this event was because the Lightweight Championship that was to be held during Extreme 1 had been cancelled.
- This battle marked the first appearance of Team Typhoon in any Robot Wars competition.
- This episode marked a rare occurrence of Craig Charles's closing rhyme not including the words "Robot Wars".
