Robot Wars Extreme: Series 2 was the second series of the UK Robot Wars spin-off Robot Wars Extreme. It was originally broadcast in early 2003 on BBC Choice and repeated later in 2003 on BBC Two. However, as Five bought the rights to the show while the series was running, the final three episodes were never shown on BBC Two. The series was hosted by Craig Charles, the pit reporter was Philippa Forrester and commentary was provided by Jonathan Pearce.
The series was re-run on various TV channels in the UK and abroad, including the British network Dave during the summer and winter of 2011. This succeeded repeats of Extreme Series 1 which had run between the summer and winter months of 2010. Dave owned the rights to both series for a time, repeating both series on occasions. Repeats of Extreme 2 on Challenge began between 28 January and 18 February 2016, a few weeks following the announcement of the Revival Series.
As of 2023, Extreme Series 2 is available to stream in its entirety on Mech+, alongside the first series plus the main Classic, Revival and Dutch runs.
Format[]
Unlike the first series of Extreme, which featured a variety of battles and tournaments spread over several episodes, the second series primarily focused on episodes dedicated to smaller tournaments. The sole exception to this was Robot Rampage, which featured a variety of championships and one-off battles for lower weight classes.
Fourteen separate competitions took place throughout the 16-episode series, each with their own themes and formats. These included staples from past series such as the All-Stars, Challenge Belt and Tag Team Terror, as well as new tournaments such as the European Championship and the New Blood Championship. The latter held particular importance to the main UK Series, as it involved newcomers to Robot Wars fighting for an automatic entry into The Seventh Wars.
All-Stars[]

This year's format was of two heats, with the two heat winners meeting in the Grand Final.

Cancelled Events[]
According to the original Robot Wars discussion forums, at least three further events were planned for Extreme 2, but ultimately never shown:
Demolition Derby[]
- "Eight robots compete in various challenges designed to test their driving ability and control under pressure. A specially designed arena, full of obstacles, skill tests, point scoring challenges and fighting opportunities will be designed to test the roboteers to their very limits."
- — Description on original Robot Wars discussion forum (archived)[2]
Demolition Derby was to be a full episode featuring eight competitors in a series of driving and control-based challenges. Much like the Gauntlet and Trial stages of the first two UK series, these challenges would have consisted of a variety of obstacle courses and points-based stages, as well as 'skill tests' and occasional combat elements. According to the description, the competition would have taken place in a separate arena to that used in regular combat events.
It is unknown whether Demolition Derby was produced or scrapped as a concept, or if any robots were entered. However, the event was referenced in the October 2002 Robot Wars souvenir programme, published just a few weeks prior to filming, though billed as a regular combat event by this time.[3]
Robot Rampage events[]
Two additional events were also planned for the Robot Rampage episode:
- Super Heavyweight Knockdown, a revival of the Super Heavyweight Championship which would have been billed as the main event.[2]
- A 'Walker class' event, dedicated to walking robots in a similar vein to the Series 3 Walker Battles.[2]
Like Demolition Derby, it is unknown whether the Super Heavyweight or Walker events were produced or cancelled, or if any robots were entered into them.
