- "If you look at Science Block, our robot, it basically looks like a lot of the teams who didn't get in. A brick with a spike."
- — The team on Science Block
Science Block was a competitor that attempted to enter Series 3 and 4 of Robot Wars, entered by Chase Terrace High School. It initially attempted to enter Series 3, and returned for Series 4 under the name Science Block 2, but on both occasions, it was not selected to compete.
Design[]
Science Block was an invertible, six-wheeled rectangular box-shaped robot armed with a kinetic spike as its main weapon. It was built by two A-level students and their teacher, and painted blue with hazard markings and signs in an attempt to make its appearance more interesting.
Etymology[]
Science Block's name was chosen in a "name the robot" competition held at the school, with the name being chosen by Owen Powis[1].
The Team[]
Science Block was designed and constructed by two A-Level students from Chase Terrace High School in Staffordshire, Adam Shale and Matthew Rowlands, with help from their Physics teacher Adrian Coles[2].
Qualification[]
- "I think basically RW are trying to get the ones that are going to look the most impressive on television, even if this means making a •••• robot. I bow before all of you who built superior robots that didn't get in, because we all know that we can always kick the ones that look nice's ass anytime. Next year, it's practical, strong, and pretty!"
- — The team on Science Block's failure to qualify for Series 3[3]
Science Block originally entered Series 3, but was rejected after its audition. The team cited its functional, yet simple design as a factor in it not being selected for the series.
- "Chase Terrace High School hopes to continue the project next year to promote engineering skills in younger pupils."
- — Burntwood Mercury, 1999
The team also entered Series 4 with Science Block 2[4], but failed to qualify again for currently unknown reasons.
