The Eviscerator was a lightweight robot which appeared exclusively in the 1996 US Robot Wars competition. Competing in the Face-Off tournament, it only fought one battle against Wonderbug, where it suffered from radio interference issues caused by its own weapon system. As a result, The Eviscerator would be disqualified along with its opponent, as neither robot was able to display controlled movement across the arena.[2][3]

Design[]

The Eviscerator was a two-wheeled machine driven by gearmotors, with both its chassis and armor panelling made from thick wood. As its main weapon, it was armed with a horizontal cutting saw powered by a weedwacker motor, which was mounted on a 'lift assembly' at the front. While potentially damaging, the saw contributed to The Eviscerator's drive issues, as the electrical noise produced by the weedwacker motor was enough to continuously 'jam' its own receiver.[2]

Robot History[]

1996 US Championship[]

The Eviscerator competed solely in the 1996 Lightweight Face-Off championship, where it was drawn against Wonderbug in the first round.

From the outset, problems plagued both machines, with Wonderbug unable to move at all from its starting position. Due to the aforementioned radio jamming issues, The Eviscerator could not move properly either, twitching slowly across the arena. Less than twenty seconds into the match, smoke began pouring from The Eviscerator, which was left immobilized on one side and only able to drive back and forth in half circles.[2][3]

When it became clear that neither robot would be able to engage in combat, the Judges stopped the match altogether. In their assessment, it was decided to disqualify both The Eviscerator - the more mobile of the pair - and Wonderbug from the Lightweight Face-Off, as neither robot displayed sufficient controlled movement in the arena.[2][3]
