The Little Green was a featherweight robot which appeared exclusively in the 1997 US Robot Wars competition. Entered by a team from Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, it lost its only battle to The Fishstick from Guam in the Featherweight Face-Off, and would not compete in any other tournaments at the event.[2][3][4]

Design[]

The Little Green was a four-wheeled robot with a welded steel chassis and a box wedge-shaped aluminum shell. Internally, it took its drive layout from a 'small RC car', presumably incorporating a powered rear axle and car-like steering for the front wheels. This would result in The Little Green having a large turning circle.[2]

In addition to its wedge shape, The Little Green was equipped with a small 'diamond saw' powered by an electric motor. To circumvent possible overheating issues, the robot's speed controller was accompanied by a fan placed over the top. The fan, however, would not prevent The Little Green from suffering these issues in combat, as it proved susceptible to getting dislodged by heavy impacts.[2]

Robot History[]

1997 US Championship[]

In the 1997 Featherweight Face-Off, The Little Green was to have initially faced No Love in the opening round. However, radio interference issues prevented it from being ready in time, with the event organizers taking the unusual step of allowing No Love to fight both robots from the other planned 'Dual Match' pairing - Gorange and Sabotage.[5]

The Little Green was thus deferred to a later Round 1 match, where it would face the overhead flail spinner The Fishstick from Guam.

During the opening moments, it approached and brushed past its opponent, the movements having the effect of destablizing The Fishstick from Guam as it spun up its weapon. Colliding with the wall, The Little Green ponderously turned around and backed into Keith Gould's machine, recoiling into the bumper on impact. In its attempts to ram The Fishstick from Guam, it would take multiple hits from the latter's flails, and end up backing into an arena flipper.[3][4]

This maneuver proved especially costly, as multiple strikes from the flipper paddle lifted and dislodged the cooling fan inside The Little Green. The Little Green persevered, backing into The Fishstick from Guam, then another flipper. Another head-to-head exchange between both competitors followed, resulting in The Little Green's saw being bent out of shape by The Fishstick from Guam. A lack of on-off switch meant that the saw, while stalled, was still active, causing it to overheat. Smoke began pouring from inside The Little Green as it circled around and kept driving backwards into The Fishstick from Guam.[3][4]

Following another collision with The Fishstick of Guam, The Little Green stopped moving altogether and continued smoking. By this point, its electronics had completely 'fried' as a result of the stalled saw. The Little Green was deemed to have lost; the damage it sustained proved too severe for it to continue its run in the Featherweight Face-Off.[3][4]
