Robot Wars Wiki

The Shaman was a robot which attempted to qualify for Series 3 and Series 4 of Robot Wars.

Design[]

"The whole Robot's weapon system runs using a Pneumatic arm, this arm can flip Robots that are carried up the wedge. Also at the top of this arm is a hammer that has a full arc that can hit opponents. This multipurpose arm also works as a self righting mechanism if the Robot is flipped."
— The Team on The Shaman's weaponry

The Shaman went through two different designs for the two times it attempted to qualify. The first version was armed with a pneumatic hammer which was also capable of being used as a lifter, helped by its wedge shape. The robot was made from steel and ran on two Bosch 750w DC Motors, powered by two 12 volt batteries and such power allowed the robot run at a top speed of 16mph. No information is known about the second version of The Shaman, although the team intended to increase power of the robot's drive. Despite the inital intention being to create 'The Shaman 2', the team claimed they reverted to using the first version again some time before the Fourth Wars qualifiers.

Etymology[]

The name refers to a person regarded as having access to, and influence in, the world of good and evil spirits.

Qualification[]

The Shaman was in a completed state by the time it was set to attend the Series 3 auditions. However, one week before the auditions were to take place, tragedy struck for the robot. Firstly, the wheel bearings being fitted resulted in the axle being bent out of place, and additionally the speed controllers burnt out, resulting in the team being unable to attend auditions. The team informed Mentorn of their issues.

"The Shaman was supposed to be our series 3 robot. Unfortunately we managed to screw it up 1 week before the audition so were knocked out. What happened was a series of two quite major problems. Firstly when fitting the wheel bearings for the left hand drive wheel the axle was bent putting our work behind schedule by about 4 hours. We managed to fix it by sinning the axle while holding a file to the bent edge, this allowed it to spin freely again. Secondly and more importantly we blew up our 4QD speed controllers. At the time of writing we are still unsure about what caused this problem but we suspect a short on the wire connecting the right hand motor controller to the dual axis joystick controller board."
— The Team's reasons for withdrawal

Despite this withdrawal, Mentorn informed the team that they were automatically allowed to enter Series 4, claiming that the robot had an unconditional place in the Fourth Wars, how much of the team's claim is true cannot be verified as the team's website never updated after the fact. The Shaman was meant to be a new robot but the team reverted to using the first version of the machine.

"The first thing to do was to write a polite letter to Mentorn informing them of our problems. Luckily they have said that due to how far me managed to get they will give us an unconditional place on series 4. Next we decided what to do with The Shaman. The answer seemed to be to get it back up and running again, then to pick apart our design and find faults in it. using this information we will cannibalize The Shaman and start construction on The Shaman II."
— The Team's claim

It is unknown if The Shaman was still required to attend qualifiers, but it is known that The Shaman was present nevertheless [3]. However, The Shaman did not appear in Series 4 for unclear reasons.
