Throughout both runs of Robot Wars, there have been many instances of a robot being thrown out of the arena. It occurs when a robot is thrown over the side wall lining the Robot Wars Arena, into the space between the wall and the outer enclosure, and can no longer take part in the battle.
While the area had no formal name in the original series, the Revival Series recognised this as a dedicated flip-out zone. Thus, the floor-level sections behind the entry gates, along with the lower sections behind the heightened inner walls, were all collectively named the Trenches.
Overview[]
Prior to the televised UK Series, a limited number of out-of-the-arena attacks were documented to have been performed during the original 1994-1997 US competitions and the 1995 UK Open Competition. Three notable instances of these were inflicted by La Machine, whose ramming force was enough to push Grunt out of bounds during the UK Open, as well as flip DooMore and Punjar into the space behind the moving bumpers in 1996 Heavyweight Melees. In the latter cases, the bumpers were considered part of the arena side wall, though the low height of these wall sections made it possible for robots to rejoin the battle if they were able to free themselves from the mechanism. Footage of these attacks was included in the American Robot Wars 1996 and Robot Wars: The First Great War video releases. La Machine's flip on DooMore was also aired as a highlights clip in Series 1, Heat D; Jonathan Pearce simply stated that DooMore had been thrown 'over the edge'.
In the televised show, the tactic was first demonstrated in the Series 3 Grand Final, where it was immediately acknowledged as a legitimate method of defeating opponents by knockout. Up to this point, the latter condition could only be met by immobilising or (from Series 2 onwards) pitting other robots. Though primarily a goal of flipping weapons, some lifting weapons and even vertical spinners have had success defeating opponents through this method. House Robots such as Sir Killalot, Mr. Psycho and Matilda began to conclude robot defeats by dumping or ejecting them from the arena, and the Arena Floor Flipper was capable of throwing featherweights out towards the end of the original run.
Chaos 2 was generally considered the first robot to officially achieve this feat in any televised Robot Wars series. Defeating an opponent in this way was initially highlighted as its trademark, with Jonathan Pearce often calling the attack method George Francis' "party trick". Later, robots such as Firestorm and Thermidor 2 began to utilise it as a means of finishing a battle, and Wheely Big Cheese arguably performed the most famous out of the arena flip against Axe-Awe during Series 5. By Series 7, it was not unusual to see several out of the arena flips in an episode - thirty such occurrences took place in that series alone.
Flipping a robot out of the arena was the quickest way to defeat an opponent, as it could be done in very short order without delays such as charging a spinning weapon or waiting for the pit to descend. Of the thirty-three shortest battles in the UK Robot Wars, twelve were concluded by a robot being thrown out of the arena, four of those being the fastest, at 5.6, 5.8, 6.5 and 9.7 seconds respectively.
In the Series 8-10 arena, the walls around the arena corners were greatly increased in height, making it near-impossible to throw robots out from those areas. However, the three entry gates between the left, right and rear-most walls remained low, allowing opportunities for a robot to throw another into the nearby Trenches for a win through the same method. For Series 8 only, the space immediately behind the pit release button (later the Arena Tyre) was also left uncovered to provide a fourth Trench area. By Series 9, the latter was occupied by the newly-introduced Dial of Doom, leaving the entry gates as the only areas where out of the arena flips remained possible.
Leaderboard[]
The record holder for most out of the arena flips by a competitor robot is Dantomkia, which defeated nine robots in this way throughout its appearances in the UK Series. Sir Killalot, as a House Robot, holds the outright record, having dropped 15 robots out in total across the UK, US and Dutch versions of the show.
Rank of all competitor robots which have thrown another robot out of the arena[]
- Robots listed with a gold background (desktop only) have held the record for most out of the arena flips at any one time.
- Robots listed by number of out of the arena flips. Where tied, the robots are listed by order in which they first achieved the feat.
- Robots listed with a dagger (†) were parts of clusterbots, including robots with minibots, and are classed as counting for a full number. Each part counts as one, but in the case of multiple robots in a clusterbot being thrown out in the same battle, it still counts as one.

Record for most consecutive Out of the Arena flips[]
- Chaos 2 & Thermidor 2 (2 robots) - Because Series 5 and Extreme 1 were filmed simultaneously, it is hard to determine which robot set the original consecutive record. In addition, the two machines set the record in different ways - two robots in a single battle (Thermidor 2, Extreme 1 Mayhem), or two robots in successive battles (Chaos 2, Series 5). As a result, both machines have been recognised as the original record holders.
Note: Wheely Big Cheese, Bigger Brother, Cyclone, Raging Reality, M2, Dantomkia and Gravity all matched this before it was broken, but for convenience, the honour remains with the original holders. X-Terminator would later make the same achievement
- Tsunami (3 robots) - In Series 7, Tsunami matched Thermidor 2's feat by defeating Major Tom 3 and Diabolus in its first round battle, and then broke the record by flipping Constrictor out in the second round.
Note: Atomic and Firestorm 5 both matched this before it was broken, however the record remains with the first robot to achieve it. Rapid would later make the same achievement.
- Atomic (4 robots) - All four of Atomic's victories in Series 7 were scored by throwing another competitor out. By flipping S.M.I.D.S.Y. out of the arena in its Heat Final, Atomic matched Tsunami's record, which it broke in its next battle by flipping M2 out of the arena in its first Semi-Final round.
Note: Eruption later matched this, however the record remains with the first robot to achieve it.

---|---|---|---|---|---|
Apollo | The Swarm | Heat A, Group Battle | Flipper | Only Rubber Duck was thrown out, so the clusterbot as a whole was not deemed immobile. First and only instance of a robot throwing another out over the heightened walls of the Series 8-10 arena. | |
Apollo | Sabretooth | Heat A, Semi-Finals | Flipper | ||
Behemoth | The Swarm | Heat A, Semi-Finals | Lifting Scoop | Only Skye was thrown out, so the clusterbot as a whole was not deemed immobile. | |
Eruption | Aftershock, Crackers 'n' Smash | Heat B, Group Battle | Flipper | The first flip sparked minor controversy, as there was confusion between Team Shock and Team Conker over whether the battle could safely continue due to damage inflicted to the Floor Flipper. As no klaxon sounded, 'Cease' had not been called, enabling Eruption to take advantage and throw Aftershock into the Trenches; in the process, Aftershock's disc clipped and damaged one of the entry gates. Eruption achieved two records with these out-of-the-arena flips. Firstly, it became the first robot to eliminate all parts of a clusterbot through this method, throwing Crackers out first, then Smash. The other record it managed to achieve was to become the first robot to eject three robots in a televised battle. |
|
Big Nipper | Crackers 'n' Smash | Heat B, Robot Redemption | Flywheel | Only Smash was eliminated, meaning that the clusterbot as a whole was not deemed immobile. However, Big Nipper did succeed in achieving one of the highest out-of-the-arena flips of all time, damaging the arena lights in the process. It also became the only competitor in the Revival Series to throw another robot into the trenches using a spinner. | |
Rapid | Track-tion | Heat C, Group Battle | Flipper | Track-tion, upon being disrupted by the Fog of War, veered too close to one of the entry gates, enabling Rapid to take full advantage and throw it out. | |
Rapid | Track-tion | Heat C, Semi-Finals | Flipper | Shortest battle in UK Robot Wars, at just 5.6 seconds. Rapid also became the second robot to flip the same opponent out of the arena twice, after Eruption in Series 9. | |
Rapid | Terrorhurtz | Heat C, Heat Final | Flipper | Rapid became the second robot to win a heat having thrown a robot out of the arena in all of its battles. Final out of the arena flip in Robot Wars. |
