Whirlpool 70 (also called W70) was a Swedish robot that entered The Second World Championship, which was broadcast as part of the first series of Robot Wars Extreme and the first season of Robot Wars: Extreme Warriors. It lost its only battle, after being flipped by Firestorm 3 and set upon by Sir Killalot.

Design

Whirlpool 70 was a tracked robot built out of a swimming pool cleaning device, armed with a heavy rotating steel frame with four flailing maces attached to it, which acted as the robot's full-body spinner. According to Robot Wars Extreme: The Official Guide, the rotating frame could also be fitted with spikes or hooks in place of the maces. The front of Whirlpool 70 was lined with red LED's. However, the robot could not self-right, a weakness highlighted on its statistics board, and it was extremely slow at 3mph.

Etymology

Although the robot's full name used on its statistics board was Whirlpool 70, the robot was more commonly referred to as W70 by Jonathan Pearce and other presenters. Ironically, the pronunciation of the 'shortened' name W70 is longer than its full name, by one extra syllable.

Robot History

Extreme 1/US Season 1

Whirlpool 70 represented Sweden in the Second World Championship, aired during the first series of Robot Wars Extreme, and the first season of Extreme Warriors. In its opening melee, Whirlpool 70 faced Firestorm 3 of the United Kingdom, Drillzilla of the USA, and NEAT Machine of the Netherlands.

Whirlpool 70 started the match very slowly as it tried to get its spinning body up to speed. Drillzilla rammed Whirlpool 70, but was pushed away by Firestorm 3. NEAT Machine used its battering ram to stop Whirlpool 70 from escaping, but Whirlpool 70 then drove very slowly away and into Sir Killalot's grasp. It was here that Whirlpool 70 was damaged by Sir Killalot, leading to its breakdown. Meanwhile NEAT Machine had been flipped over by Firestorm 3, which then proceeded to flip Whirlpool 70 onto its side. Sir Killalot placed Whirlpool 70 back onto its tracks on the floor flipper, but it was no longer moving, and so it was counted out by Refbot. Whirlpool 70 was then thrown by the floor flipper, and was left inverted. Whirlpool 70 still managed to get in Firestorm 3 and Drillzilla's way as they continued fighting, but it had already been eliminated from the battle that was eventually won by Drillzilla.

Trivia

Whirlpool 70 is one of only two robots from Sweden to compete in Robot Wars. The other is Rawbot.
